An Effective and Humane Approach to Treating Addiction

A perfectly rendered, thoughtful review of the sad status of the system's attitude, treatment default, and resistance to change coupled to a persuasive presentation of a humanistic, more effective alternative as exemplified by telling patient profiles and validating studies. What I appreciated most was the reasonable voice that advocates an approach that is both intuitive and best practice and offers a persuasive argument for an approach that engages the patient in the practice of healing and offers hope for so many who suffer from addiction in all its forms.

A fine book.

I finally understand what happens to the brain when we are addicted.
The author explains it clearly, with the layman in mind but without condescension. It's a gift to write about complex issues with the clarity that I imagine comes from deep thought and rich experience. The author writes with a humanity that has no place for judgement and blame. It's a wonderful book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the human condition

Addiction as a sickness, and the attitude towards addiction as a form of superiority.

As a kid growing up in the 1990’s, I saw ads for drug treatment centers that emphasized addiction as an illness. They’d describe alcoholism as “being hit by a truck” and rehab as “going to a place that can set the broken bones.” In this book, Hijacked Brain, Dr. Henrietta Robin Barnes doesn’t simply promote the addiction as illness idea, because that’s already accepted. What she does is discuss the shaming of the addict, along with the idea that intoxicants are rooted in life.
The book is divided into chapters dealing with the origins of addiction, the biological relationship between the body and drugs, the stigma of being an addict, and the types of recovery. There is, in the chapter on stigma, an interesting analogy regarding the attitude towards addicts. Dr. Barnes refers to the Dreyfus trial, and how France was suddenly stirred into a frenzy of antisemitism. She quotes a French sociologist who claimed that the anti-Semitic attitudes were a great way to feel superior; if the people could collectively blame a Jew for the nation’s troubles, then everyone could feel superior.
In the chapter Risk and Resilience, Dr. Barnes describes some patients who seek treatment for addiction. Some of them grow up in households where addiction is commonplace, and that puts the children at greater risk. If the parent is an addict, and her parents were as well, then her children are at risk, and addiction becomes generational. One addict had a tendency to blame others for his problems, railing against his girlfriend for calling paramedics when he had a seizure. The fact that he had the seizure in front of her child didn’t bother him, but he was bothered that CPS made his girlfriend throw him out.
Dr. Barnes doesn’t mince words about the prognosis for addiction treatment in the USA. It’s not well-established under the current healthcare system, and there’s a propensity for prescribing drugs to treat addiction. When she goes into the origin of addiction, she makes clear that early America had a problem with alcohol, and cocaine and opium were an available alternative for someone who wanted to forget how hungry they were. Nobody criticizes the worker who drinks coffee to stay awake, so is it fair to criticize Indians who chew coca leaves to work harder? Whether it’s no-doze pills for truckers, painkillers for coal miners, betel nuts, quat leaves, or whiskey, addiction is going to have a lot to do with environment.
