About the Author

Kate E. Reynolds, MSc (Dist) BSc. RGN. PGDipHEd. PGDipCouns., worked for the UK's National Health Service for 18 years, seven of which were in HIV/Aids and sexual health as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Senior Counsellor and staff trainer. In 2005 Kate's son was diagnosed as having 'classic' autism with intellectual (learning) disabilities. Since then, Kate has written several books for JKP about sexuality education and autism/intellectual disabilities. She is a researcher and public speaker; in 2016 she spoke at an All Party Parliamentary Group meeting about sex education and disability and speaks extensively with parents and caregivers.

Jonathon Powell completed a Diploma of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Animation at Griffith University, Queensland. He has illustrated material for Family Planning Queensland, including several brochures, an education manual, 'Talking About It', and a CD-ROM package, 'Puberty Plus'. Jonathon has also illustrated 'Making Sense of Sex' by Sarah Attwood, published by JKP. He lives in Brisbane, Australia.

My daughter has classic autism and this has been very helpful in getting her to understand the difference between private and public. be aware it is very descriptive because it has to be for our kids, so if you are not comfortable then this may not be right for you, but how else will our kids learn these thing?

Very useful for my work as an in-home behavioral support clinician for children with Autism. I lend this and its counterpart book (Things Tom Likes) to parents to read with their children. It is straight-forward and makes clear when and where this behavior is or isn't appropriate. It normalizes the behavior and implies no shame.

The book gives a step by step description of what the author did to cure his gum disease, in this case periodontal disease that had advanced to the stage where his periodontist recommended gum surgery. There are numerous techniques and products suggested, of which the Perio Protect and using power toothbrushes with ORA-MD seem to be the bedrock of the routine used.

Also, there is an interesting angle on using anti-inflammatory supplements, mainly antioxidants such as Astaxanthin and CoQ10, to help with the periodontal disease and also for overall physical health. Treatments and products from both the conventional treatment world (i.e., Antibiotics, power brushes, floss) and natural healing worlds (ORA-MD, Oil Pulling using Sesame and Coconut Oil, Vitamin C and antioxidant supplements)

    BUY THIS BOOK!!!

    This is a fantastic book full of key information for people who want to begin vaping. Donald Blakely is a wonderful writer who covers pro, cons, and be carefuls. His friendly, to the point, concise writing style makes me feel as though he is right beside me as a guide, teacher, and mentor. It is very easy to locate and re-read important information. Plus I learned many things I was unaware of such as such conditions such as "Vapers Tongue" and dehydration. I'm living outside the US in a large mega city in China but I'm not aware of any vaping shops like one can easily find in America. Nor can I access You Tube tutorial videos. This book and his follow up "Bigger Clouds" are valuble companions and references.
    If you are thinking of starting to vape BUY THIS BOOK!!! It's a treasure trove of valuable information. In fact save yourself some time and order both "I Want To Vape" and "Bigger Clouds" together.

    A great beginners guide for anybody first starting out.

    Although I've been vaping for about 2 1/2 years, I still felt as though I had more to learn. So I purchased Donald Blakely's first 2 books in his 3 or 4 book series. I also purchased this first book with the idea of passing it along to any of my friends and family that want to start vaping. And I'm so glad I read it. It's a well written book that explains everything you need to know when first starting out, in the world of vaping. Mr. Blakely did a wonderful job!!! I'm so glad I purchased this book. I can now pass it down to a few of my family members that have expressed an interest in vaping. He's done a much better job of explaining all aspects of vaping, than I could EVER do!!! LoL. Thank you Donald Blakely. :-)

    Well written and easy to read

    Very solid set of information. Well written and easy to read. I've been vaping for a year now and it filled in a lot of gaps for me. Well worth the money. There are a few typos but that's not a big deal at all. There is some great advice in here. I will be using this as a reference in the coming months and years and I've already bought vol.2. I was a little skeptical about his credibility, but then again i'm a pretty skeptical person with some exceptions obviously. Then I realized that there are no credentials in this field and a little faith is healthy. He says he's done his research and it certainly seems like it. The book is well thought out and well organized. Scientific research moves much slower than the industry and practices of vaping and so mostly we have to rely on anecdotal evidence and of course, each other, which is one thing that is very solid about the vaping community on average. Whatever your purpose, this book is worth buying.

    Success for Spike!

    I've tried and tried... attended workshops, read books and downloaded countless MP3's to get myself to actually DO this mindfulness practice that I really do want to incorporate. Everyone that peddles meditation is so... healthy, though. I just couldn't relate. Her plain-spoken, witty, real-world advice in combination with her intentional unapologetic vulnerability is the perfect combination that makes this book the most inspiring read I've consumed on the topic. I believe her and can relate. No fuss, no fluff. Spike nails it and has helped me Sit. This book delivers exactly as it says it will and more.

    A Very Good Read

    Local Austin writer Spike Gillespie has outdone herself this time. Her new Book "Sit, Stay, Heal: How Meditation Changed My Mind, Grew My Heart and Saved My Ass" shouldn't be missed. This latest book is part autobiographical, part motivational and all heart. Gillespie recounts very personal and painful experiences that brought her to realizations that are marked with the kind of wisdom that only experience and deep thought can bring. Focusing on one year, but reaching back to long ago trauma Gillespie takes the reader on a existential tour that I won't soon want to forget. With humor, delightful sarcasm and a secular discussion of meditation she shares her healing process and gives practical advice for how you as the reader can also use mindfulness to explore and mend damage, celebrate forgiveness and move through life's challenges. I highly recommend this author and this book.

    The one book on meditation you need to read. NOW.

    This is one of the most amazing books I've ever read! Amazing, because 1) the writer, Spike Gillespie, really knows how to tell a story and 2) someone finally actually came out and told you HOW TO MEDITATE, and it's not that hard. It's also not the big secret I've been lead all my life to believe; you don't need a mantra, you don't need a lot of props or even a lot of knowledge of the art of meditation. What you need is the desire to meditate, the ability to make it a priority, and the knowledge, as Spike repeatedly says, that you can't do it wrong.

    Spike Gillespie is a truly gifted storyteller and this is her story, her journey through a maze of recurring depression and Post Tramatic Stress Disorder to a place of light and hope. She's not perfect--in fact, she's a lot like the rest of us: trying to work, to have a relationship, to be a good mother and friend, to serve others. The thing that differentiates her is her ability to keep moving forward despite the frustrations of everyday life, despite her childhood being raised by an enraged, mentally ill father, despite her various weaknesses and neurosis and her uncanny knack for "crushing" on the wrong man, and to understand that life is a process, not a test you have to ace.

    Reading Spike Gillespie is like having a great evening with a terrific friend, someone who tells hysterically funny anecdotes but who also has the humility and insight to learn not only from her own experiences, but from life in general. I laughed out loud in several places and was near tears in others, and it's no wonder--there's a universal quality to Ms. Gillespie's story that is obvious and undeniable and incredibly useful; I can apply the lessons she learned the hard way to my own life, and that's satisfying in itself.

    There are spiritual lessons to be learned here, too, but Gillespie never shoves these down the reader's throat. Instead, each chapter starts with a lesson on meditation and then morphs into another marvelous story about the year Gillespie spent learning to meditate daily and posting to her blog, meditationkicksass.com. If you want to meditate but have been stymied by people trying to tell you that a) it's difficult b) it's costly or c) you're not spiritually advanced enough, this is the book for you! Highly recommended.

    The must read book for everyone who is determined to stop smoking

    This is a must read book for everyone who is determined to stop smoking, but needs that final push!
    I have been a smoker for 20 years. For the last couple of years I am trying to quit. By trying I mean setting the date when I would quit, but then I always found an appropriate excuse to postpone chosen day to more suitable time. It always came down to next Monday… I could never do that final step and simply not light up another cigarette. I decided to search for help and I came across this book.
    Author first describes excuses that we smokers use to continue smoking and explains why all these excuses don’t actually hold water. I found myself in several of given excuses and realized how I was preventing myself to even try to stop. Then the author reveals the naked truth behind smoking – it’s an addiction and a very hard one. I am among those smokers who believed that they have this nasty habit under control and can quit whenever they wish… boy, was I wrong. The book helped me to admit to myself that I have an addiction problem with very serious consequences for my health.
    So, it happened finally that I took that step. One day I woke up and didn’t light a cigarette. I just decided that morning it is that day for me. I was encouraged with all the information that I received in the book. I knew what to expect and how will I feel. First couple of days I had several extremely critical moments when I was craving for a cigarette and believed I couldn’t manage. But I reminded myself that the feeling will pass. That was most valuable thing that I got out of the book - how to deal with cravings and how to stay motivated. It is clear that author was a smoker and he knows what he is taking about when describing the process of quitting with all its side effects. Thank you, Tom Kendall :-)

    Tom Kendall is the modern day Allan Carr! I found this book while searching for yet another method to help solve my fifteen year smoking habit. I downloaded and read it cover to cover in a single day. Not only is it full of useful information and statistics it's written in a way that makes it fun to read. I caught myself giggling out loud a few times and was entertained for it's entirety. It's been 3 days now and I'm still smoke free. Having this book at my finger tips makes me feel like I now have control over my life. If ever I get the urge to smoke I know I can just open it back up. This book is a life saver, literally. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun way to break the habit.

    There is no safe level of smoking

    Tom Kendall says in his book what the rest of us want to say to people to make them quit smoking. However, the only person who can make them quit is the person doing the smoking. He lists the excuses people have for not quitting and then gives the rationale behind each of these excuses. I think my favorite saying in the book is "there is no safe level of smoking" (p.18). If you or someone you love needs to quit smoking to lengthen their life this is definitely a guide that has been long overdue. Thank you Mr. Kendall, well presented!

    Great book for class!

    Such an easy to read book and provides practical knowledge, albeit some pretty obvious, but overall a good helper for my Social Work Practice class. The worksheets in the back that have scenarios for the reader to practice with are really helpful too and push you to think about what you would do in certain situations. I haven't done much of those since they're not required for my class but they are very helpful! I'm sad I only rented, if I would've known how much I would've liked the TB then I would've bought it!

    Cost about $95 to get you going, well worth it!!!

    Important note: You MUST have a soft foam roller and very small, very soft ball to use the techniques in this book. And, this therapy is not a replacement for strength training, aerobics, or muscle stretching. The workshop isn't a requirement; you can definitely learn the technique from the book. All you need is 10 minutes a day once you learn the "method. This is an excellent book! It's going to cost about $95 for book and equipment, so check my overview of pricing at the bottom of my review for more info.

    I just happened to be watching Dr. Oz and he had Sue Hitzmann on his show talking about and demonstrating her new "MELT" Method. MELT stands for Myofascial Energetic Length Technique and focuses on hydrating your connective tissue and easing pain. Connective tissue is just below the surface of the skin and is a component of the whole body that is typically overlooked. This book will definitely help you understand and work with your connective tissue to improve health and well being.

    Since I have my own home yoga, fitness, and meditation practice I was intrigued by Sue's theories and purchased the Kindle version of the book right away. I also got on her web site meltmethod dot com to find out more and was pleasantly surprised that she was having a workshop/class right here in Portland Oregon the same weekend! I signed up for the Sunday noon, 1.5 hour class with book signing afterwards.

    Workshop: I attended Sue's workshop which was well attended by many people in my same age group 40-65, both males and females. Sue came in and with her high-energy she explained in very simple terms the theories behind her MELT method. She is a very captivating speaker! Then we learned all about the hands and foot technique which uses a small, very soft rubber ball (measures 1-1/2 inches across). You use a series of point compressions and various movements what she refers to as pressing, gliding, shearing, rinsing, and friction. Then she moved on to similar techniques using a soft roller. Excellent workshop and well worth the time and money if you can attend, check her web site!

    FYI: All of the material presented in her workshop is also covered in her book. The book includes more techniques than the workshop covers.

    Sue's MELT techniques are not new, they are traditional techniques of reflexology, chi, somatic-movement, self-massage, and even dry brushing and uses pressure-points and movement of lymphatic fluids. However, Sue's approach is a very unique combination of these traditional techniques in a high-energy, quick-fix, yet body-gentle environment. Her methods will help you get in touch with your body's alignment and you could very well heal yourself or at least reduce your amount of chronic pain. Using her methods over a period of weeks will definitely help you with pain management.

    MELT addresses the four effects of "stuck stress" (which accumulates in the connective tissue and causes pain) with the "Four R's" which are: Reconnect (Body Sensing), Rebalance (whole body balance), Rehydrate (restore hydration in the connective tissue), and Release (decompression) in an absolutely wonderful combination that will get results!

    I initially ordered the Kindle version of the book, but was concerned if I was actually getting as much as the printed book. So, at the book signing I also purchased the hard-bound, printed book, so I have both the Kindle and Paper book that I am reviewing.

    The book is broken into easy to follow Parts and Chapters, but I would definitely recommend reading the first 100 pages of the book to fully understand the MELT method before starting the practice. Part four is excellent once you understand the methods and gets you going with your own self-treatment plan. All the movements are lined-out and include a short description and photo of each the positions and movements.

    Comparing Kindle to Paper Book:
    Note: I am using Kindle on an iPad
    1. The tables in the book are easy to read, but in the Kindle version the columns don't line up very well and they are difficult to follow, especially in landscape mode.
    2. You get all the same demonstration photos (Sue is the model) in both the Kindle and Paper versions. Both are of low-quality and although you can click on the Kindle version photos, they are quite grainy and do not provide any enhancement over the smaller photos in both Kindle and Paper versions.
    3. I would opt for the kindle version over the paper version both for ease of reading and cost.

    Reason for my Amazon 4 start rating:
    I marked down this book for quality reasons, not content. The paper version is printed on very low quality paper, brown-ish newspaper print in simple black ink (no color photos and the black and white photos look low-quality/low-res). I was disappointed that page 157 was ripped out of the book down the center of the page, so this page is completely unreadable ...not a big deal since I have the Kindle version too :) For $26 I would expect better quality paper. I was disappointed since it had a full-color glossy hardcover, but when I opened the book it was cheesy, poor-quality I would have opted for softcover over hardcover and used better, longer lasting paper. Also, I don't believe the book was printed in the USA, but it's not apparent anywhere in the printed book. It doesn't say "printed in China," but my guess is that it is printed somewhere overseas. I believe her rollers and balls are probably also manufactured in China :( For these reasons I marked it down by 1 star.

    I have to mention, I think Sue Hitzmann has a good thing going here that will probably help a lot of people by avoiding surgery related to chronic pain and getting off pain medications, but I also feel like it is somewhat "gimicy" that she's trying to sell her balls and roller. I understand everyone's trying to make a living and be successful, so I really can't knock it, it's just an observation. I believe in her heart she is truly trying to help people heal themselves, so in this regard the book and Sue's work deserve a 1000+ stars!!!

    Sue's techniques are truly helpful. I learned so much from her in the workshop and reading and following her book. More than anything her book, instructions, and techniques really helped me to know and get more in touch with what connective tissue feels like over plain muscle stretching. I will definitely integrate her techniques into my home practice.

    Sue definitely knows her stuff and she learned about connective tissue from the experts and even by dissecting cadavers! I'm still wondering if she found any sign of chi in there ;-)

    Very Helpful Method/s For Easing Pain

    For starters, there are a few things you may find helpful to know about the MELT Method. First, MELT is an acronym for Myofascial Energetic Length Technique. In other words, the method works to bring our connective tissues back to health--a key to healing many tension based ailments. Developed from her own her intuitive gifts and an impressive dedication to healing sciences and bodywork, Sue Hittzman has created "exercises" to help hydrate and restore your connective tissues, which eases or eliminates your pain.

    I put "exercises" in quotes because the MELT method isn't about exercises in the aerobic classes or Pilates sense, but think more along the lines of relaxation and self-massage techniques. Sue Hitzman's goal was to create a self-help method which had similar results to her hands-on sessions. You should also know it does require a relatively small investment in equipment to get started; namely you'll need a soft foam roller and a small ball.

    Sue Hitzman to re-create the effectiveness of her hands-on work in a self-help format. MELT restores the supportiveness of the body's connective tissue to combat chronic pain, improve performance, and decrease the accumulation of stress caused by repetitive postures and movements of everyday living.

    My physical therapist introduced me to the Melt method several months ago. I had suffered from severe anxiety and insomnia and it was beginning to morph into chronic muscle tension that was, at the very least, debilitating. At one point I was told by a practitioner that this could possibly be a precursor to Fibromyalgia. That's when I got really worried and took up the physical therapist suggestion to try the Melt method.

    Almost immediately my insomnia began to improve and my muscle tension began to ease up. Through discipline and commitment to the Melt method I eventually lowered by anxiety medication. I am still committed to the practice and believe that soon I will be free of all of my symptoms. I cannot say for sure if my symptoms were a precursor to Fibromyalgia or another type of auto immune disease but it certainly felt like I was heading down that road. Back then I felt that my body was, in fact, attacking itself. I no longer feel that way. I would recommend Hittzman's book to anyone that has dealt with anxiety, insomnia, neurological disorders, muscle tension/pain, and/or any other type of related issue. Life is too short to live with pain when there are potential solutions. Through a combination of proper hydration and free our muscles from tension, we can heal ourselves--or get much further down that road.

    Who knew those aches and pains were optional? MELT Method techniques have helped

    First up, I sought out this book because there's just no way I'm going to pay someone else to give me a massage. Lots of reasons for that, but that's the bottom line. I wanted to find some relief from aches and pains that I thought must be due to tension and built up stress, and this seemed a likely starting place that would be more comfortable than trying to work with a hard roller.

    People are complaining that it seems too hard to get to the meat of things in the book. (There really isn't a quick-start section in the book, though she does walk you through a few things early on, those exercises aren't the main lessons, and they're just an introduction.) In some ways I agree that this not quite ideal, but then again she's crammed a memoir, textbook, and workbook all in one volume, and intersperses bits of each as you go along. Towards the end, there are more specific sections saying, essentially, 'if you want to treat this specific issue, do this, then this ...', and there's a lot to absorb before you get there. Working gently, with focus and attention is pretty much essential. Without learning what you're doing, why and how, I think it would be awfully easy to work sloppily and inattentively, which would probably decrease the effectiveness of the work. (That's my experience, at least. I have to be focused on what I'm doing, and paying attention.)

    Me? I'm just glad the book EXISTS, whatever quirks of presentation it might have. I don't live in a part of the world where Sue might visit for workshops or anything else, and I don't have the freedom to travel, so this do-it-yourself technique is pretty much my only option. Better to flip through some pages, than do without.

    Unlike some reviewers, I was not much annoyed by her writing style. I've read some really bad fitness/health books by people with more enthusiasm than material, and this book is leagues ahead of those.

    The author is clearly kind of obsessive, but I don't think the book (or the method) would exist without that, so I'm not distressed by it. She's totally committed to sharing what she's learned, excited about her discoveries, fascinated by what she's learned, and amazed by the experiences she had along the way. Sharing this energy is part of the fun of the book, experiencing things she felt and thought along the way, and how one thing led to another. She's done her own research over years of work, and didn't copy someone else to get here, and I think that's admirable. If it takes her a while to explain all that, so be it. Her story and her journey are very personal, and apparently very deeply felt, and seems quite genuine. This personal style of presentation doesn't bother me.

    The technical/anatomical stuff doesn't fascinate me quite as much as the rest of it, but I was interested to read about it, if nothing else to understand the parts of the body I'm working with.

    If you're looking for a quick-start guide, the card set that comes with the hand/foot kit is really great, but it seems to me that the cards and the book (and the video, for that matter) don't quite match up. I'm assuming she added small things as things were in production on each item, so each has a little bit that's not in the others. The bits in question are interesting additions, but don't necessarily diminish the experience of working with the balls and the rollers.

    A very brief session can bring a lot of relief, and it seems to me so long as you manage to do some pressure point work, gliding, shearing and rinsing, first with the soft balls then the harder ones, or just on the soft roller, that's plenty. :shrug: I like having a variety of options.

    I just try to incorporate a bit of MELTing into every day, just to get a routine going, and it seems to be 'enough' pretty much no matter what I do.

    The author does stress the importance of doing self assessments before and after each session, it really does help me notice the changes that are taking place. (For example, the difference in my hands seems kind of subtle, but it's there, and over time has gotten better still. I might not have noticed, if I hadn't made the effort to keep track.) It's possible that part of the self-assessment is more meditative than some people are comfortable with, but I do find it therapeutic and helpful. (It's a physical check-in, noticing what's going on with the body and limbs, noticing spots of tension or release, etc., not anything metaphysical/prayerful.)

    As I've gotten older, I've had some aches and pains that came and went, stiffness that crept up on me, and I'd begun to assume that they were an inevitable part of the aging process.

    After having worked with the MELT Method for a few weeks on my own, some of those aches are gone, and I feel more limber and alert than I have in ages. Moving is easier, and I just feel more comfortable in my own skin. Whew. Who knew that was even possible?

    Sure, if I don't keep up with the techniques, the aches and stiffness come creeping back, (though staying hydrated as she recommends is very helpful), but at least now I know there's something I can DO to help them remain at bay.

    I bought the book first, just to see whether or not the techniques were doable.

    I even did a few things on my hard roller (which she cautions against, guess I missed that advice early in the book), and was definitely impressed. Wrong roller or not, the first night I used the MELT techniques, I slept better and more comfortably than I have in a long time.

    Once I realized that I needed to find a softer option while waiting for the soft roller and hand/foot kit to arrive, (didn't realize what level of firmness/softness was required til I saw Sue on youtube holding/bending a soft roller) I got the idea to buy one of those foam noodles kids play with in the pool, since they were super cheap at the big box store. I covered that with two layers of 3/4" foam from an otherwise awful and useless exercise mat I'd bought years ago and never used. Still firm, but softer than the hard roller.

    I rummaged around in a few stores, and found some rubber balls, and one little soft golf ball made of foam that I thought might do, and started experimenting with the hand and foot techniques.

    My backordered products didn't take TOO long to arrive, maybe 17 business days from order to arrival on the roller? Less for the hand/foot kit.

    I do prefer the MELT brand products to my cheap-y DIY versions, the balls in the kit are all a bit smaller than most of the ones I'd been using, and the soft balls are softer than anything I'd found (though the foam golf ball does come close, and works fine for the hand exercise where you work each finger, pressing first pad and tip into the ball one at a time.)

    My DIY pool-noodle soft roller with two layers of softer foam on top of the rather firm noodle is pretty much just the right firmness, but I do prefer the real one.

    The things I've picked up from her book that I've been trying to incorporate into my day:
    1) Staying hydrated.
    2) Getting a bit of sunlight, out doors, every day. (Shade is fine.)
    3) Noticing what I'm feeling in my body. Aches, the urge to move, energy flowing, etc., whatever it is.
    4) Noticing how movement seems to ease my stiffness, and how warming up makes moving less jarring.
    5) Soft foam roller self-massage just feels good, so I don't dread it, put it off, or think of something else to do.

    The one thing I do have trouble with is doing the MELT techniques at least an hour before bed. Not sure why, but some days it gets pretty late before I get around to it. I've decided to accept this as proof that I'm more active than I have been in a while, and that's a good thing.

    For me, this is a do-able, adaptable set of self-massage techniques that help me feel more limber, active and comfortable.

    I hope she comes out with more of the quick-start cards for the work on the rest of the body, I find the ones for hands and feet very convenient. Plus, the book is kinda heavy, and hard to maneuver when I'm doing certain moves.

    The basic techniques are pretty simple, and once you get the idea, not hard to do.
