After an endless search for solutions, this book finally gave the depth, insights, understandings to my own unrequited loves, and see them in such a different light, that brought me clarity, peace of mind, and finally a restored sense of self pride. Beautifully written, engaging, personal, educational, courageous. a great marriage of history, science, arts, personal stories...recommended!!!

Romantic Obsession Examined

have been reading your book "Unrequited" with a mixture of "aha" moments and gratitude that this book was written. I find it interesting
that many of the women interviewed led accomplished lives yet ended up getting trapped in a downward spiral regarding
unrequited love.

I had healthy relationships when I was younger but have been my own worse enemy in the past decade. I have gone done the road of unrequited love more than once in the last decade.

Ms Phillip's book made me realize that I am not alone and that there's light at the end of the tunnel. I wouldn't wish finding yourself in an obsessive relationship on anyone. The exit strategy is almost impossible. But I felt soothed by read this book. It made me realize I am not alone

Well-Researched and Intensely Personal

Lisa A. Phillip’s "Unrequited" blends well-researched case studies with her own very personal story in this nonfiction/memoir that grapples with the power of obsessive, unrequited love. Phillips approaches this subject with both sympathy and frankness: while she empathizes with “the unwanted woman,” she never coddles; unlike many dating books, she examines the difficult nuances of both being the unwanted lover and the rejecter. She details how both male and female stalkers are treated. Most impressively, Phillips intertwines her own story with research in such a way that owns up to her actions – she accepts what she did and never tries to justify it. This book is a fascinating read for anyone interested in psychology, gender studies, or love.

Well-written Reminder of the Dangers of White Sugar

With all the recent negative publicity for artificial sweeteners and the danger to our collective health, one might believe it is better to go back to white sugar. Some yogurts already have switched back to sugar. This information document shows the reasons we should not go back to the sugar bowl.
Sometimes there is too much health advice out there. Eat carbs. Don’t eat carbs. Eat fats. Don’t eat fats. It could make the average person want to throw in the towel and open the cookie bag. But read this first. You might change your mind.

Imagine exercising daily, counting calories and excluding food groups only to have your belly fat or love handles grow bigger and bigger. The more you strive to meet your goal, the farther you are from achieving it. It’s the always shocking, incredibly frustrating, unsuccessful dieting phenomenon. And it happened to me.
 
At the time, I was a student and I assumed that the diet and exercise program I was following wasn’t strict enough, long enough, or strenuous enough. Naturally I decided that I simply needed to do them both—harder. So, in desperation I added more cardio sessions and further reduced my food intake. The result? I gained another five pounds on top of the 20 I had already piled on. How could this be?
 
Let’s recall my equation for fat loss from  The Hormone Diet : Lasting fat loss = hormonal balance + (calories in – calories burned)
 
My intense efforts failed because they only served to make my hormonal imbalance, the true underlying cause of my weight gain, worse. Unbeknownst to me, I had a deficiency of thyroid hormone going on in the background. The imbalance only grew worse because the physical stress associated with excessive caloric restriction and over-exercising actually increased the negative impact on my thyroid hormone deficiency and further slowed my metabolism. After this, three things quickly became very clear to me. First; weight loss is by no means only about calories in versus calories out—hormonal balance needed to be added to the equation. Second; hormones are very powerful substances that influence many aspects of our health and wellbeing. And third; the level of one hormone impacts another, which established the need to think big picture when it comes to weight loss.
 
So, if we now know this as the new formula for fat loss, then surely we need to start thinking about all the factors that upset our hormonal balance and, therefore, ultimately make us fat. But I’ll tell you a secret before we get into a discussion of the eight most common fat-packing hormonal imbalances and the reasons why we are fat. This program fixes them all.
 
Tackling the Taboo Topic of Hormonal Health

After the release of my first book,  The Hormone Diet , I received hundreds of emails from people around the globe expressing exuberant relief that they finally found some answers. Many felt as if the book had been written directly for them, and they had at last discovered a solution to their nagging symptoms and hormonal hurdles. People were no longer sweeping their issues under the carpet, making excuses or hitting a wall with no discernable answers. It was exactly why I wrote the book in the first place—to create a practical guidebook that explains the cause, the effect and the solution, so patients can make informed decisions about their own health—one step at a time.
 
But a lot of readers also requested my three-step wellness plan to be more simply laid out. They wanted a more direct pathway to successful solutions—without the science. And so herein lays The Supercharged Hormone Diet 30-Day Plan. I want better health to be accessible to everyone, and this plan is so clear anyone can do it.
 
The pace of life just seems to get more and more hectic. Between work, family and other obligations, we’re all finding ourselves stretched—and stressed. Unfortunately, this busy lifestyle often leads us to place our health at the bottom of the priority list. Without realizing it, we find ourselves beholden to a host of poor habits— eating on the run, skipping workouts, grabbing too few hours of sleep and dismissing everyday symptoms that are often flags for something more serious. Habits that leave us carrying excess pounds, looking drained and feeling, well, just plain bad. Often we respond by seeking a quick fix to lose weight. But when our bodies are so out of balance, long-term weight loss is next to impossible. This book is about all the aspects of your lifestyle that come together to make—or break—your weight-loss success. It’s about taking the time and some simple steps to make yourself, your health and your overall wellbeing a top priority again.

Both women and men have spent too long believing that their hormonal symptoms are a liability or are psychosomatic and can simply be ignored. Yet hormones are powerful chemical messengers in our body—they control everything from our reproductive functions to our mood, sleep, appearance and almost every other aspect of daily life. The very same hormones that are behind a whole host of health concerns (such as the ones listed above) are also influencing your ability to control your appetite, shed body fat and gain lean muscle. They dictate how successful we will be with a given weight-loss program; whether we will be able to drop un - wanted pounds or continue on the diet merry-go-round to no avail. So many of us believe we can get healthy by losing weight. But, it was my goal to teach you in  The Hormone Diet , that we must be healthy in order to lose weight.
 
 
The Eight Most Common Fat-Packing Hormonal Imbalances

If you have been unable to lose weight, even with diet and exercise, your hormones are very likely the reason you have not been successful. Our bodies are hard-wired to send us signals when something isn’t right, but often we’re too busy to hear them begging for attention. Many of us experience signs and symptoms of hormonal imbalance every day. Recognizing and treating the subtle signs of hormonal imbalance is essential, yet so many of us have been out of balance for so many years that we don’t know how to recognize what “balance” is anymore.
 
No matter how an imbalance manifests on the outside, the internal reality remains the same—any and all hormonal imbalance leads to difficulty losing weight and increased risk of obesity. Unfortunately, the most common imbalances cannot be solved by dieting alone. In fact, they can prevent successful fat loss, even when great diet and exercise plans are in place. If you have not been successful in the past, one or more of the following hormonal imbalances could be the culprit:
 
Inflammation: Digestive disorders, allergies, autoimmune disease, arthritis, asthma, eczema, acne, abdominal fat, headaches, depression and sinus disorders are all associated with chronic inflammation, which has recently become recognized as the root cause of obesity and unhealthy aging. At the 2007 Postgraduate Nutrition Symposium at Harvard University, researchers revealed findings suggesting that inflammation and excess insulin are the major contributors to rising rates of type 2 diabetes and the overall fattening of North America.
 
Insulin Excess: Insulin is an essential substance whose main function is to process sugar in the bloodstream and carry it into cells to be used as fuel or stored as fat. There are several reasons for excess insulin, but the main culprits are stress, consuming too much nutrient-poor carbohydrate—the type found in processed foods, sugary drinks and sodas, packaged low-fat foods and artificial sweeteners—insufficient protein intake, inadequate fat intake and deficient fibre consumption. Heart palpitations, sweating, poor concentration, weakness, anxiety, fogginess, fatigue, irritability or impaired thinking are common short-term side effects of high insulin. Unfortunately, our body typically responds to these unpleasant feelings by making us think we’re hungry, which in turn causes us to reach for more high-sugar foods and drinks. We then end up in a vicious cycle of hormonal imbalance, a condition called insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome, which only furthers weight gain and our risk of diabetes and heart disease.
 
Depression or Anxiety: Serotonin exerts powerful influence over mood, emotions, memory, cravings (especially for carbohydrates), self-esteem, pain tolerance, sleep habits, appetite, digestion and body temperature regulation. When we’re feeling down or depressed, we naturally crave more sugars and starches to stimulate the production of serotonin. The World Health Organization (WHO) projects that depression and anxiety will soon be the number-one disability experienced by adults. Plenty of sunlight; a healthy diet rich in protein, minerals and vitamins; regular exercise and good sleep support serotonin production. When we measure our current lifestyle against all the elements necessary for the body’s natural production of serotonin, the wide-ranging epidemic of low serotonin is certainly not surprising. Add in chronic stress and out-of-control multitasking— two of the main causes of serotonin depletion—and it’s no wonder many of us suffer from depleted serotonin.
 
Chronic Stress: Under situations of chronic stress—whether the stress is physical, emotional, mental, environmental, real or imagined— our body releases high amounts of the hormone cortisol. If you suffer from a mood disorder such as anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder or exhaustion, or if you have a digestive issue such as irritable bowel syndrome, you can bet your body is cranking up your cortisol. Through a complicated network of hormonal interactions, prolonged stress results in a raging appetite, metabolic decline, belly fat and a loss of hard-won, metabolically active muscle tissue. In other words, chronic stress makes us soft, flabby and much older than we truly are!
 
Toxic Estrogen: Researchers have now identified excess estrogen to be as great a risk factor for obesity—in both sexes—as poor eating habits and lack of exercise. There are two ways to accumulate excess estrogen in the body: we either produce too much of it on our own or acquire it from our environment or diet. We are constantly exposed to estrogen-like compounds in foods that contain toxic pesticides, herbicides and growth hormones. A premenopausal woman with estrogen dominance will likely have PMS, too much body fat around the hips and difficulty losing weight. Menopausal women and, yes, men too, may experience low libido, memory loss, poor motivation, depression, loss of muscle mass and increased belly fat.
 
Menopause: According to projections by the government of Canada, 1 in 6 women will hit menopause within the next decade. Contrary to popular belief, menopause, which can begin as early as 40 years of age, is not just about estrogen decline. Supplies of other hormones such as progesterone, testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) also tend to dry up, right along with the skin, hair, eyes and libido. So many women come to my office intensely frustrated with the unwelcome changes in their body during this phase of life, especially an annoying thickening of the waistline. Other common symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, headaches, heart palpitations, poor memory and concentration, urinary urgency or incontinence, vaginal dryness, changes in the appearance of their skin and hair and emotional changes including depression, anxiety and irritability.
 
Low Testosterone: Testosterone enhances libido, bone density, muscle mass, strength, motivation, memory, fat burning and skin tone in both men and women. An increase of body fat and loss of muscle may happen, even with dieting and exercise, when testosterone is low. Testosterone levels tend to taper off with aging, obesity and stress, but today men are experiencing testosterone decline much earlier in life. This is quite an alarming finding, considering low testosterone has been linked to depression, obesity, osteoporosis, heart disease and even death. Dr. Mitchell Harman, an endocrinologist at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, blames the proliferation of endocrine-suppressing estrogen-like compounds used in pesticides and other farming chemicals for the downward trend in male testosterone levels. Phthalates, commonly found in cosmetics, soaps and most plastics, are another known cause of testosterone suppression.
 
Hypothyroidism: Without enough thyroid hormone, every system in the body slows down. Those who suffer from hypothyroidism feel tired, tend to sleep a lot, experience constipation and typically experience weight gain. Extremely dry skin, hair loss, slower mental processes, brittle hair, splitting nails, diminished ability to sweat during exercise, infertility, poor memory, depression, decreased libido, feeling cold, or an inability to lose weight are also symptoms to watch for. If you suspect you have a thyroid condition, make sure your doctor assesses you and your full range of symptoms, not just your blood work. Even levels of TSH (an indicator of thyroid function) within the normal range have been proven to accelerate weight gain and to interfere with a healthy metabolic rate in both men and women.

Since hormones control our appetite and stimulate metabolism, achieving and maintaining hormonal balance plays an essential role in achieving lasting fat loss. Yes, diet and exercise are important. But the lasting solution must also include sleeping well, conquering inflammation, detoxification, optimizing digestion, limiting stress and introducing supplements or natural (bio-identical) hormone replacement. All of these factors influence our hormonal activity— and, ultimately, our weight-loss success—in truly dramatic ways.

The answer I had been looking for....

I came across this book after hours of research. I am 32 years old and have endometriosis. After my second child was born I had been having a hard time loosing weight-it was coming off but very slowly. I was also exhausted, cranky, and many other things that endometriosis brings on. Knowing all that I know about having this disease is that it causes various hormone imbalances. I am a firm believer in using diet to regulate and that is how I found this book. I started 3 weeks ago and I noticed immediate changes. I lost 6 lbs and only now have 3 to go to make it to my pre-baby weight, although I have to say that is just the added bonus. I feel so much better, I can get out of bed in the morning without feeling sluggish and I am not nearly as moody. I definitely recommend this book to people with any of the hormone imbalances that Natasha talks about. Endometriosis is something I'll have for the next 20 years and I feel like I've found a way to manage it.

I bought this book at the same time I purchased the kindle version of Dr. Turner's book: "The Carb Sensitivity Program"......which is her lastest book. I recommend her newer book, because the information in her previous books are duplicated in "The Carb Sensitivity" book, and she has new information: a very easy to follow eating guideline that is suitable for everyone at all stages of insulin resistance.

This was her second book. Her first one was better and this one was just okay. It offered the same information and some more details. I don't think you need two of her books on the same subject. But either one would stand alone and suffice.

You won't find a book like this anywhere else. The methods have been experienced to good effect by many, the ideas have matured with testing and use, and the clarity of the contents of this book comes the same way.

Koorosh Ostowari is the founder and president of Prosperity Today, an organization dedicated to the practice of mindfully cultivating and maintaining balance and prosperity in everyday life. Simple tools for a profound change

So many financial management books focus on budget balancing and investment strategies but there is a state of clarity that is needed before you can even start to tackle those steps.

The Money Anxiety Cure has 2 simple tools - somatic mindfulness and meditation, or inner listening as I interpret them, to help clear your mind and bring you to a balanced foundation. From that state you have the possibility to create an inspiring, grounded and creative vision for your future and that is the starting point, and fuel, to tackle what can feel like the hum drum and dry topics of financial management logistics.

This book provides the starting point for getting clear on the life you want to create. Then you can manage your finances to achieve that.

His excellent book, The Money Anxiety Cure

His excellent book, The Money Anxiety Cure, set me on the path to confronting my money worries and turning them into operational plans for a better future. When I began reading the book I had a lot of skepticism about any kind of “cure” for my screwed up financial life. It took me awhile to break through my own resistance to learning anything that might help me. There were a lot of truths I needed to look at. At first it was like looking into a mirror I didn’t want to look into. Reading about his personal story helped me realize I’m not alone. He helped me see things that were obvious after he showed them to me. I’m still amazed by how much I’m involved in every part of my own money dramas. I needed to read this book.

The exercises and questions at the end of the chapters caught my attention and I spent a lot of time meditating on them. I took his suggestion about doing journaling to help my thinking. It still helps. I’m in a better place with my relationship to money. Koorosh Ostowari’s (Letmefixyourworry’s) book helped me a lot. I had a bunch of trouble with a lack of money and the book helped me get to a place where I feel balance in my life. That feels good. I recommend the book to anyone who wants help to tackle his or her money worries. I’m glad I read it!

Ayurvedic Soup for the Soul

Katie Silcox is a yoga instructor, teacher, and mentor, who currently conducts workshops, retreats, and trainings internationally. She has received some impressive accolades, such as in 2009 being named one of San Francisco’s Best Yoga Teachers Under 30 by Common Ground Magazine.

More importantly though, she has herself experienced the stress and pressure associated with achieving “success” in the modern, western world, stress and pressure that led to anxiety and panic attacks and the choice to either start self-medicating to survive or get to the problem’s roots. Through her search to shed cultural expectations and societal programming, and find her source of true fulfillment, she discovered yoga, tantra, and Ayurveda, the transformational power of which she shares in this book.

Happy Healthy Sexy is for the modern, western woman who is lost and trying to be found. I reiterate the latter point. It is for the woman who is actively seeking to be found, the woman who is open to spirituality and who has realized that being judgmental does nothing but sequester us in soul-sucking prisons that have long become self-imposed. I believe you'll need to be at this stage in order to be open to the book's message.

It is at once a friend, empathizing with your feelings of emptiness and inner conflict brought on by a life of trying to be what your family and/or society expects you to be, and a mentor, guiding you through various ayurvedic protocols. I personally had, prior to reading this book, very little knowledge of Ayurveda, save for a teeny bit of knowledge acquired from talking with a German girl who I once shared a room with in Indonesia; she had just spent several weeks in Southern India in an Ayurvedic clinic being treated for what sounded like burnout from a thankless job. But I digress.

Silcox’s tone is smart without being pedantic or patronizing. At the same time she is playful without too much cliché or cheesiness. She has structured the content as follows.

Part I is where us noobs become acquainted with Ayurveda, which literally translates to “knowledge of life.”

This ancient Indian tradition describes the different types of bodies and how they should best be cared for. I’ll try to give an idea of what the content entails. It says the soul has 4 goals or desires: 1) kama or luscious daily pleasure; 2) artha or the means of prospering; 3) dharma or purpose; and 4) moksha or freedom. The essential pillars of health are food, sleep, and sex. 5 elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth) comprise all matter. These elements combine to form doshas.

Doshas are our fundamental character and body types. They are vata, pitta, kapha, or some combination of the three. The book explains all of these concepts and then helps you diagnose your type(s). The premise here is that health, vitality, and longevity are needed in order to truly thrive; and none of this is possible without balancing your doshas. If I could offer a tip, it would be to spend some time with the content of this chapter. Make sure you feel confident that you have diagnosed your dosha type, as the rest of the book will be much more useful if you have this reference point.

Parts II, III, and IV are then devoted to teaching you how to find and maintain balance for each type through proper diet, sleep hygiene, meditation, exercise, and skincare. The subject of sex is even covered. Page after page after page of practical tips are provided. In this way, the book becomes an instruction manual that can be used to implement a change at a time, at a pace with which you are comfortable.

It’s fascinating stuff and certainly worthy of attention for the woman who is truly searching for a sustainable and balanced way to live that is energizing and fulfilling.

There were unfortunately two things that irked me. First, somewhere around halfway or maybe three quarters of the way through, typos and grammatical errors started showing up. It was as if Silcox came up against her deadline and got a little sloppy. I found it distracting; especially in light of the previous content having been so well written. Second, it seems that she imagined her audience to be Caucasian. When writing about sunbathing, the author states “[y]ou may feel tempted to bare it all out of the sheer joy of feeling the sultry sun on your wintry-white skin.” I was willing to let this reference pass. But then she said, again in reference to spending time in warm climates, [w]e just have to take care so we do not end up overheated, fire-engine red, and hungover.” I am not Caucasian and so these references felt a little exclusionary for me. But I’m not a believer of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. So while I wanted to mention these things, I still highly recommend the book.

The bottom line is this is a pretty great introduction to Ayurveda for the woman who is searching for a deeper meaning and who knows there are incongruences in her life and wants to find harmony amongst its various elements. This is the type of stuff that will help to soothe your soul and guide you on your journey.

If you're wondering, YES you should buy it.

Kate Silcox has amazing advice for all-natural full body, mind and spirit care in a modern world. Also, she is super witty, which allows this self-help book to read less "self-helpy." It feels like a conversation you would have with your best friend, albeit the most significant conversation you might ever have. I have read TONS of spirituality and yoga books, but this is by far my favorite. Read it and then gift it to all of your friends.

Excellent introduction to what The Whole30 is all about

Like most people, losing weight is one of my New Year's resolutions. I've been hearing a lot about the Whole30 and the book, It Starts With Food, and decided to get this Instaread to check it out before committing to the price of the full book.

This diet is a lot like the Paleo diet in that you can eat meat (which includes beef and chicken), seafood (which includes shrimp, salmon, etc.), eggs, vegetables, certain fruits, fats like avocado, oils, nuts and seeds. But no legumes, which are peanuts, peas, beans, navy beans, black beans, lentils, etc. But you can have green beans. No sugar, no dairy, no butter. No grains including rice, barley, wheat, corn, oats, etc. No artificial sweeteners and nothing that has preservatives. No MSG and no alcohol. These are called 'inflammatory foods,' and must be avoided to be successful on this diet. It's like a detox, really. It's okay to eat until you're full and to not count calories, but I would count them because if you take in more than your body burns, it will get stored as fat.

After 30 days, you start to reintroduce things like sugar and all the previously forbidden foods. You judge how you react to this to decide if the reintroduced food is bad for you. So if you eat a piece of cake or dive into a pint of Ben & Jerry's and you feel sick or just feel bad after eating it, then you know foods with sugar, flour, etc., are bad for you personally. But honestly, if I can go 30 days without all that stuff, I don't think I'm going back.

They guarantee this will change your life in 30 days. You will lose weight, have more energy, won't have cravings, your skin will clear up, digestive problems will disappear, and you will sleep better.

This Instaread gave me a good overview of what this is all about. I highly recommend it.

Great buy, glad I got the summary first.

So glad I bought the summary first. I hate to invest in diet books for fear that they are a gimmick. The Instaread summary clarified that the full book will be worth purchasing, as it gave a concise outline to what kind of information is in the book. I will be doing this more often when it comes to "how-to" and diet type​ books so that I don;t waste my money.

A good read for dieters and choosing the right kind of food.

Choosing the right kind of food has always been a struggle for me. With the line of work that I have, I just had to eat something, healthy or not, just to give me a fill and boost at work. Together with stress and poor eating habits, the results showed on the weighing scale. I have always wanted to look for a diet that could work best for me and I found it. With this book, it guided me on how to choose the right kind of food you should take and what to avoid. It follows a strict plan which you might find difficult at first but eventually you will learn to adapt on it. This is not only temporary but the Whole30 program will be part of you daily and you will see results!
