About the Author
James Bennett-Levy, PhD, is Associate Professor in Mental Health at the University Center for Rural Health, University of Sydney, Australia. He has pioneered self-experiential CBT training since his first self-practice/self-reflection (SP/SR) paper in 2001, and has made a significant contribution to the therapist training literature with over 25 CBT training publications. In particular, his 2006 Declarative-Procedural-Reflective model of therapist skill development is widely used and cited. Dr. Bennett-Levy is coauthor or coeditor of several books on CBT practice, including, most recently, the Oxford Guide to Imagery in Cognitive Therapy.

Richard Thwaites, DClinPsy, is a consultant clinical psychologist and CBT therapist who serves as Clinical Director for a large National Health Service psychological therapies service in the United Kingdom. In addition to delivering therapy, he provides clinical leadership, supervision, training, and consultancy in CBT, including the implementation of SP/SR programs. His research interests include the role of the therapeutic relationship in CBT and the use of reflective practice in the process of skill development.

Beverly Haarhoff, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Massey University, Auckland, New Zealand, where she was instrumental in setting up the first Postgraduate Diploma in CBT in the southern hemisphere. For the past 14 years she has trained and supervised both CBT and clinical psychology trainees. Her research has focused primarily on SP/SR as mechanisms to support and improve therapist skill acquisition in CBT therapists at all levels of development. Dr. Haarhoff has a private clinical practice and regularly presents CBT training workshops.

Helen Perry, MA, is Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and a clinical psychologist in private practice. She played a key role in creating the CBT Diploma Program at Massey University and is an active CBT trainer and supervisor. She served as Project Manager for a research study focusing on online CBT training and coauthored two papers in this area. Ms. Perry has worked across the lifespan in a wide range of clinical settings. Her special interests are in complex/comorbid depression and anxiety, and trauma- and stress-related disorders.

Light on info and contradictory

The information in this book was not as extensive as I had hoped for. There are several places where the book contradicts itself, for example in one chart it says not to use lemon oil during the first trimester, in another chart it says to use lemon oil for morning sickness/nausea which is most common in the first trimester. I've also found that several oils that I tended to use pre-pregnancy are missing. Overall I'm not very confident in this book and have chosen to use my EOs aromatically only, especially during the first trimester.

You have to have this Book:-)

I first took this book out of the library, loved it so much had to have it. It has literally change the products I use. Most appreciated is page 18 and 19's The science of the label. Its a beautifully done book with awesome photos, easy to follow formulas, and full of common sense about what "beauty" really is.

A great source of information along with recipes. The book holds so much information, but presents it in a beautiful and easy to read/digest manner. The pictures are very nice and help to make you feel more aware of what you are using and how to use it.

I'm just very happy with this book. I checked it out at the library first and decided I had to have it. You might want to do that if you're not sure. YES.....it's that nice!

This is a great way to begin your journey on meditation and learn everything you need to know about how to change your life.There are so many health benefits to meditation and the best one is the inner peace you can find. The author does a great job of explaining not only the techniques, but the many benefits of meditation as well.I found this book to be very well written, incredibly insightful and straight to the point. I have already tried some stress relief techniques and I feel a great difference and I can tell you...it's really working. I couldn't be happier with the results! An amazing resource

This has everything that a beginner would need to learn how to meditate. It's a huge compendium of resources and valuable insights and info. Sean Parker explains and delves into each meditating style and how to perform it. The chapter on Vipassana was especially intriguing, since I've never heard of it before, but its quickly become my favorite ways to be mindful. He even goes into the historical background of it. Very informative and fun to read! Great book for anyone who want to jump into meditation. Highly recommend!

Jim Kirwan is the founder and former CEO of TrySports, an award-winning specialty retail business. He stepped down as CEO at the end of 2012 to create Get America Moving. He has appeared on television to talk about his passion for health and fitness, including Fox 5 News in Las Vegas, NBC in Tampa & Palm Springs, Kron 4 in San Francisco, ABC in Albuquerque (including a five-part series), and of course ABC News 4 in Charleston, his hometown.

Comprehensive, amazingly well documented, all the information you need to change your health at your fingertips

I am an exercise avoider, so this book was perfect for me - not only did it lay out the reasons why I need to change my attitude (well documented elsewhere, but resplendant here with facts, stats, graphs and charts of how my lack of exercise is shortening my life and hurting the quality of my life) but it gave me all the tools needed to do so. From level 1 (novice) to level 5 (optimal) it charts a plan for each level, which makes starting an exercise program highly doable. (I'll be thanking him later, I'm sure)

Jim's passion is not just for exercise and his own health, but for getting all of America moving and in shape, which comes through loud and clear. He is on a mission, driven by his father's poor health due to lack of exercising and subsequent early death in his 40s. This motivation took on epic proportions, much to the reader's benefit. This volume is well researched, a comprehensive rendition of a topic that clearly he is an expert in.

The book makes a good case for why exercise is the "secret sauce" for a happy life, then goes on to tell you in detail how you too can have this youthful elixir. Yes, grasshopper, you hold your own cure within your power. But far from lecturing on what we already know (the benefits of exercising) but aren't doing, or doing enough of, each chapter ends with a Your To Do List. giving a step by step implementation plan for every piece of content.

The key drivers to success, the answers to questions (like: What TYPE of exercise should I do? How LONG should I spend exercising? How should I allocate my exercise time between each kind of exercise?) - questions that I have wondered about on exercising - Jim answers them in spades. And by "in spades" I mean so thoroughly there is no confusion of what to do when and for how long. Customized to you.

If you are serious at all about living a full, healthy, youthful life - at any age, any weight, in any bad shape - this book will help you immensely. I highly recommend absorbing what it has to offer, then using the knowledge to change your life for the better. You owe it to yourself not to waste another day not moving towards your own optimal health. The eXercise Factor is a blueprint of how to get there.

Straight Forward and Incredibly Informative

As a manual therapist, I have worked with thousands of clients and addressed many forms of physiological stress. One of the most consistent factors I observe in clients with physiological challenges is the sedentary lifestyle. There are plenty of reasons for the inactivity, but, unfortunately, the results are always the same, pain, stress, and dysfunction.

In The eXercise Factor, Jim Kirwan provides a comprehensive look at the effects of inactivity and solutions to reverse the downward spiral. Using “Four Key Drivers of Success”, exercise, knowledge, nutrition, and the X Factor, Kirwin outlines the most important issues towards building a better life and enjoying the journey. Although there are plenty of books and guides to help develop an exercise regimen, there is a passion that lifts The eXercise Factor above the rest.

As a healthcare provider, I only share information that I know will benefit my clients. After reading The eXercise Factor, I am confident the protocols presented in this book give clear direction towards optimal health. It will be my pleasure to share this “wellness manual” with all of my clients!

A desperately needed book that stands out

As a weight loss coach for 31 years I know that it requires a healthy lifestyle and a good weight loss strategy to lose excess weight for good. And exercise should definitely be part of such a strategy. How can anybody seriously hope to save time by not exercising although we all know that exercising can increase our life expectancy.

What I appreciate about Jim's eXercise Factor is that it's real without any sugar-coating. The truth can only be said clearly. And what I like even more is that it's not unreasonable. Everybody can use the eXercise Factor, no matter the weight, the age or the fitness level. This is very helpful especially for obese people.

What I like most about this book is that it's undogmatic. Being an opponent of The Biggest Loser and how they go about weight loss and exercise I like the way Jim starts his readers slowly according to their current age, weight and fitness level. Most people lose their interest in exercising because they tend to overdo at the beginning. With this book this can't happen.

Well done, Jim. Great job. Love your book.

By historical standards, the early years of the twenty-first century have been remarkably peaceful. Only rarely are people killed by their own kind, and only very, very rarely are they killed by other animals, microorganisms excepted.  Nevertheless, even though the statistics should reassure, many people worry about lone killers, murderous gangs, and terrorist bands. At the same time, most people are vaguely aware that even in this relatively calm era, wars have made countless victims.
 
Yet mass violence against unarmed civilians has claimed three to four times as many lives in the past century as war: one hundred million at least, and possibly many more. These large-scale killings have required the efforts of hundreds of thousands of perpetrators. Such men (and almost all were males) were ready to kill, indiscriminately, for many hours a day, for days and weeks at a stretch, and sometimes for months or even years.
 
Unlike common criminals who work outside the mainstream of society, in secret, on their own or with a few accomplices, mass murderers almost always worked in large teams, with full knowledge of the authorities and on their orders.  Without exception, they operated within a supportive social context, most often firmly embedded in the institutions of the ruling regime. Unlike terrorists, the mass murderers usually did not want their deeds to be widely known.
 
How people are enrolled in the service of evil is a question that lies at the heart of this trenchant book. The subject here is mass annihilation—that is, massive, asymmetric violence at close range, where killers and victims are in direct confrontation. Abram de Swaan offers a taxonomy of mass violence that focuses on the rank-and-file perpetrators, examining how murderous regimes recruit them and create what De Swaan calls the “killing compartments” that make possible the worst abominations without apparent moral misgiving, without a sense of personal responsibility, and, above all, without pity.

De Swaan wonders where extreme violence comes from and where it goes—seemingly without a trace—when the wild and barbaric gore is over. And what about the perpetrators themselves? Are they merely and only the product of external circumstance? Or is there something in their makeup that helps them become mass murderers? Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, political science, history, and psychology, De Swaan sheds light on an urgent and seemingly intractable pathology that continues to poison peoples all over the world.

excellent,profound. Understanding how "normal men" could commit atrocities and have no guilty conscience. Refutes hannah arndt banality of evil. . why men of the Hamburg battalion were not Odinary men but ordinary men who had grown up during world war 1 with 2 million German dead, hyperinflation and >22 years of virulent anti jewish propaganda which made jews completely other to them. a compartment where this violence was "ok" and convinced germans of that era they were the victims threatened by jews.. Also also very informative about the fate of turkish Armenians , tutsis and why they were slaughtered and on and on. Stalin's terror China terror etc. What a century! and not over it yet.Also note religious belief had Nothing to do with slaughter

About the Author
Dr. Donald R. Partridge has been there...divorced...a single parent...and now in a successful stepfamily with seven--now adult--children for 28 years. Following his divorce, the author and his former wife devastated their two children emotionally through their ongoing parent wars. After changing careers, and during the 15 years that he worked with separated parents, Dr. Partridge discovered the two missing Principles needed to stabilize kids following their parents' separation.

Today, the author's work represents over a decade of practicing these Principles and observing their continuing--and amazing--benefit to his own family and to separated-parent families throughout the country.

Dr. Partridge has written eight books and has been on the radio throughout Northern California (over 200 radio shows). This is hands down the best book on blended family relationships

This is hands down the best book on blended family relationships. This is essential for anyone who is a child of a divorce family, single parent, married into a divorced family, etc. etc.!!!! This book brings hope to the Family Unit! If you think that your circumstance is special or too difficult to be restored, you are DEAD WRONG!!!! It read the book in 6 HOURS!!! 6 HOURS!!!! If you want a restored family, emotional health, restored children, get this book!!! Thank you Dr. Don Partridge. Please keep writing.

You won't put it down...

There is seriously NOTHING out there like this book. I have read so many different marriage books/blended family books, and I have to say - this was an entirely different view on how to build a successful blended family. I will also say...some of the things I read in this book are hard to read! It is really difficult to realize how you are contributing to the damage of your children even when your intentions are good!! I have been implementing a number of his steps into my own home and have seen amazing differences with my kids. This is not a book on how to blame the other parent (although I promise you, you will see clearly how the "other parent" is damaging your kids!)Instead, this book gives very clear cut steps in how to properly co-parent and bring HEALTH into your children. I have learned that there is a way to build healthy, successful kids among even the worst of separation. This book brings hope...even to those who feel it's hopeless ~ I highly highly recommend it.
