Jim Kirwan is the founder and former CEO of TrySports, an award-winning specialty retail business. He stepped down as CEO at the end of 2012 to create Get America Moving. He has appeared on television to talk about his passion for health and fitness, including Fox 5 News in Las Vegas, NBC in Tampa & Palm Springs, Kron 4 in San Francisco, ABC in Albuquerque (including a five-part series), and of course ABC News 4 in Charleston, his hometown.

Comprehensive, amazingly well documented, all the information you need to change your health at your fingertips

I am an exercise avoider, so this book was perfect for me - not only did it lay out the reasons why I need to change my attitude (well documented elsewhere, but resplendant here with facts, stats, graphs and charts of how my lack of exercise is shortening my life and hurting the quality of my life) but it gave me all the tools needed to do so. From level 1 (novice) to level 5 (optimal) it charts a plan for each level, which makes starting an exercise program highly doable. (I'll be thanking him later, I'm sure)
Jim's passion is not just for exercise and his own health, but for getting all of America moving and in shape, which comes through loud and clear. He is on a mission, driven by his father's poor health due to lack of exercising and subsequent early death in his 40s. This motivation took on epic proportions, much to the reader's benefit. This volume is well researched, a comprehensive rendition of a topic that clearly he is an expert in.
The book makes a good case for why exercise is the "secret sauce" for a happy life, then goes on to tell you in detail how you too can have this youthful elixir. Yes, grasshopper, you hold your own cure within your power. But far from lecturing on what we already know (the benefits of exercising) but aren't doing, or doing enough of, each chapter ends with a Your To Do List. giving a step by step implementation plan for every piece of content.
The key drivers to success, the answers to questions (like: What TYPE of exercise should I do? How LONG should I spend exercising? How should I allocate my exercise time between each kind of exercise?) - questions that I have wondered about on exercising - Jim answers them in spades. And by "in spades" I mean so thoroughly there is no confusion of what to do when and for how long. Customized to you.
If you are serious at all about living a full, healthy, youthful life - at any age, any weight, in any bad shape - this book will help you immensely. I highly recommend absorbing what it has to offer, then using the knowledge to change your life for the better. You owe it to yourself not to waste another day not moving towards your own optimal health. The eXercise Factor is a blueprint of how to get there.

Straight Forward and Incredibly Informative

As a manual therapist, I have worked with thousands of clients and addressed many forms of physiological stress. One of the most consistent factors I observe in clients with physiological challenges is the sedentary lifestyle. There are plenty of reasons for the inactivity, but, unfortunately, the results are always the same, pain, stress, and dysfunction.
In The eXercise Factor, Jim Kirwan provides a comprehensive look at the effects of inactivity and solutions to reverse the downward spiral. Using “Four Key Drivers of Success”, exercise, knowledge, nutrition, and the X Factor, Kirwin outlines the most important issues towards building a better life and enjoying the journey. Although there are plenty of books and guides to help develop an exercise regimen, there is a passion that lifts The eXercise Factor above the rest.
As a healthcare provider, I only share information that I know will benefit my clients. After reading The eXercise Factor, I am confident the protocols presented in this book give clear direction towards optimal health. It will be my pleasure to share this “wellness manual” with all of my clients!

A desperately needed book that stands out

As a weight loss coach for 31 years I know that it requires a healthy lifestyle and a good weight loss strategy to lose excess weight for good. And exercise should definitely be part of such a strategy. How can anybody seriously hope to save time by not exercising although we all know that exercising can increase our life expectancy.
What I appreciate about Jim's eXercise Factor is that it's real without any sugar-coating. The truth can only be said clearly. And what I like even more is that it's not unreasonable. Everybody can use the eXercise Factor, no matter the weight, the age or the fitness level. This is very helpful especially for obese people.
What I like most about this book is that it's undogmatic. Being an opponent of The Biggest Loser and how they go about weight loss and exercise I like the way Jim starts his readers slowly according to their current age, weight and fitness level. Most people lose their interest in exercising because they tend to overdo at the beginning. With this book this can't happen.
Well done, Jim. Great job. Love your book.
