A Guide to Mental Health for LDS Missionaries and their Mission Presidents, Parents, Bishops and Therapists. When should an LDS missionary stay on a mission, despite mental health challenges? When should they go home early? Spiritual growth is more accelerated and intense on a mission than in regular life. While a mission is a deeply rewarding experience, it can also be stressful. L. Marlene Payne, M.D., has been a psychiatrist for over forty years, specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. She has treated many LDS missionaries over the decades. Dr. Payne received the highest award given by the American Psychiatric Association, the Distinguished Life Fellow, for her years of service to the community. In “Mission Possible” Dr. Marlene Payne provides a guide to mental health for missionaries, their families, church leaders and therapists. Through anonymous case studies and personal interviews with mission presidents and return missionaries, she addresses the most common psychiatric disorders, their definition, course, and treatment, including: bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, body dysmorphic disorder and Asperger’s syndrome. Dr. Payne’s also advises ecclesiastical leaders and ward members in how they can best help when a missionary comes home early. But most importantly, she offers valuable advice on how a missionary can stay on and complete a successful mission.

A Must-Have for Every LDS Bookshelf
By Kjirstin Youngberg
Picked up this book today and couldn't put it down. (I was seriously sneaking peaks during meetings.)

Insightful as only someone who has worked in the trenches forty years can write, this outstanding nonfiction work is also highly readable. Interesting and up-to-date with some of the latest scientific and medical findings without being too scholarly for any adult to grasp, it answered many questions I never even knew I had about mental health. It also helped dispel myths, and educate me about the need for proper brain nutrition, and balance.

Using examples from real patients whose names have been changed, Dr. Payne details symptoms, treatment and results, without sounding overly clinical. Her obvious love of her work, people, and especially missionaries shines through each story.

Frequently reading parts to my husband, he finally said, "Don't tell me; I want to read it myself. Hurry up and finish it." He's reading it now.

We went home teaching tonight and shared stories from Mission Possible with those we visit. All agreed it will be of great value not only to missionaries, their families, mission presidents, and bishops, but to all church members. While it is true not everyone has mental problems, we all know someone who who has difficulty with others or in social situations. Knowing what to say or do for them is so reassuring. This book addresses the issues head-on, and offers something many sufferers never dream possible: hope.
