This research-based book by a psychoneurophysiologist offers an important examination of the effects of interconnectivity.

Anyone who has formed a dependency on a smartphone, tablet, or 24-hour digital connectivity would do well to read i-Minds, Mari K. Swingle’s eye-opening, and at times unsettling, book. It is both a palatable, compelling exploration of the impact of digital media on the human brain as well as an impressive piece of research. Using her own clinical observations, Swingle conclusively demonstrates that Internet addiction significantly switches brain function.


The point of Swingle’s book, however, is to broaden the scope of her observations to encompass everyday users of “i-tech,” the author’s term for interactive technology, not just those who are addicted—or as she puts it, to examine those who are affected by “technological integration versus technological interference.” The author addresses the topic both biologically (what goes on in our brains) and sociologically, from childhood to adulthood. A nice touch is the addition of sections called “Scientific Corner,” in which Swingle supports the text with specific references to scientific research.


Particularly fascinating is Swingle’s discussion of the generation of “i-kids” who have grown up with digital devices. She notes, for example, that some parents “use the medium as an electronic babysitter,” and that children who are entrenched in digital media from a young age may be missing out on key developmental experiences, such as live play.


The impact of digital media on adults is also covered in the book; Swingle discusses such topics as the Internet’s role in sex and sexuality, interpersonal communications, friendships, and community. Some of her observations are powerful and thought-provoking; for example, “We act differently and treat people differently online,” and “Every hour we spend on our computers reduces our interpersonal contact by one-half hour and along with it our ability to interpret subtle nonverbal messages. It also makes us progressively socially awkward.”


While Swingle makes an eloquent case for the fact that i-media is “rewiring our brains,” she remains nonjudgmental and scientifically balanced in her perspective. This approach makes i-Minds all the more essential as a contemporary study well worth reading.

Dr. Mari Swingle is a neurotherapist and behavioral specialist who practices at the highly-regarded Swingle Clinic. She holds an MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology, an MA in Language Education, a BA in Visual Arts, and has won numerous awards for her post-doctoral work on the effects of i-technology on brain function.

i-Minds is i-Opening!

i-Minds is truly eye-opening. Dr. Mari Swingle provides valid research on how technology can become a hindrance to any age group. I enjoyed the way she made me question popular technological norms in our society today, such as social media, video gaming, and cell phone usage, while still maintaining an objective stance on the topic. One of the most heart-wrenching points of her book is her discussion on the relation of excessive i-tech usage with mental illness. She explains to her readers why and how spending significant amounts of time on digital platforms leads to ADHD, OCD, and aggression. She was convincing in her argument merely by her knowledge on the subject and her ability to provide valid evidence to support her claim.

This book is a revolution. Through her writing, Dr. Mari Swingle pushes boundaries effectively without pointing fingers at any particular generation. She emphasizes that excessive technological use can put any age group at risk of developing behavioral issues, which is quite original compared to other authors who tend to accuse only the young of using too much i-tech. Dr. Mari Swingle has an extensive background in psychology and has performed electroencephalography (EEG) on numerous patients to make her a solid counselor on the subject. Her findings are truly extraordinary.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone from their teens to the extremely elderly. This book should be required reading simply for its astuteness in addressing a global concern that is unknown to most and could very well prove problematic for our species as a whole. This book is easy to follow and engaging throughout. I have no prior training in psychology, so I was hesitant at first on how well I would understand the author’s theories. However, Dr. Mari Swingle explains all her scientific findings in layman’s terms, so that anyone and everyone can understand her and the results of her research. This book deserves accolades, and I encourage everyone to pick up a copy and read it!

Put down your smart phone and read this book

Look around, at the dinner table, on public transportation, at other drivers at a stop light (or driving on the road), at work, just about anywhere, and many, maybe most, maybe all of the people you see are transfixed by their smart phones. A boon to communication and information? A detriment to social interaction? A signal of permanent changes in the structure of our brains and of society? All of the above? Psychoneurophysiologist Dr. Mari K. Swingle writes in i-Minds: How Cell Phones, Computers, Gaming, and Social Media are Changing Our Brains, Our Behavior, and the Evolution of Our Species that, in fact, our brains can change as a result of what she calls i-tech, but that doesn't have to be the bottom line.

On one level, Dr. Swingle's point is self-evident: new technology changes the way we interact with each other and the world around us. Written language, the printing press, the telegraph, the telephone, photography, movies, television, computers, the internet, now smart phones and social media. Dr. Swingle argues, based on her clinical observations of brain wave patterns, as well as on behavioral observations, that current i-tech takes it a step further, with actual rewiring of the brain.

Dr. Swingle is not all gloom and doom, nor does she take a Luddite position rejecting technology. "True integration," she writes, is technology that "fits in, being integral to modern life, without overriding, or eclipsing, the development, or maintenance, of other healthy behaviors." Her theme is "nothing wrong with a little, a lot wrong with a lot."

Parents and non-parents alike will nod in agreement with Dr. Swingle's assessments and recommendations to reduce i-tech usage, especially by very young kids. Brain wave patterns aside, she describes the ways in which i-tech can alter the way people relate to one another, play together, and learn. One troubling example relates to the online bullying. She argues that given the zero-tolerance policies against physical violence at school, children have taken their bullying to i-tech. In the past boys would fight and be done, or kids would taunt other kids as they passed in the hall. Now boys and girls take their disputes and taunts to i-tech, where the audience is larger, the record is permanent, and the humiliation is more widespread and accessible. The solution has become larger than the problem.

I was interested in her discussions of children with autism. She writes that if you have an autistic child, "under no circumstances permit the child to engage with i-tech, any i-tech," arguing that the hyper-focus on i-tech with thwart social development. She acknowledges that some individuals can "functionally use technologies for work and communication as needed when older," but doesn't say when "older" is old enough. I personally have watched my non-verbal daughter, an i-tech lover, use her iPad and other assistive technology to communicate and interact with others. I am delighted that we have i-tech tools to help autistic and other disabled individuals communicate. Throughout the book, I was surprised that Dr. Swingle didn't encourage more use of i-tech for people with disabilities.

Much of Dr. Swingle's advice seems very old-fashioned and common-sensical. (And I mean that in a complimentary way!) She concludes with some great guidelines: set boundaries, play (she's big on play), get face-to-face with people, use i-tech purposefully and not for its own sake. I don't know what permanent evolutionary changes we are bringing on ourselves. Dr. Swingle does really, either. But I can agree with her call to put down the phone and interact with the world around you. I-tech is a tool, and can be useful, but we must not let it take over our brains and our world.
