Wil Dieck is a writer, researcher, college professor and master martial arts instructor. He studies and teaches people from all walks of life how to use simple psychological techniques to develop high performance habits.    

Wil's most recent works includes the highly ranked Amazon Kindle book, Secrets of the Black Belt Mindset, Turing Simple Habits into Extraordinary Success and Modern Mindfulness, A Beginners Guide on How to Find Peace and Happiness in a Busy World and Arm Your Child, A Parent's Guide to Raising Happy, Positive Kids.

In addition to his work as a researcher, writer, and speaker, Wil is a professor of psychology and business at San Diego University of Integrated Studies.

Wil runs a peak performance coaching practice in San Diego, California. Additionally, he regularly works with people who are suffering from stress and anxiety using meditation, hypnotherapy and NLP. Good discussion book for new students

For those who, and myself included have been black belts for many years it was interesting to see how someone would lay out the concept of self betterment and mental discipline for others to garner a glimpse into this unknown world of adult martial arts practitioners. This is something that could be illustrated from any activity such as how a gymnast excels in life due to determination and willing sacrifices and mental reprogramming. But don’t discount the methodology of linking the self betterment of oneself to the black belt narrative. It works and it works well.

Where I felt the text came to fruition was in how the long time martial arts student will develop their unconscious mind in order to change their behaviors. So many on the outside consider the martial arts to be all about violence and aggression, this book directly challenged that premise with examples and a couple of exercise that could be followed for self examination. I have found over the years that I have done many of the exercises within the dojo (martial arts school practice area) and outside while pursuing daily life.

A quote from the book reads “Just as a small shift on a tiny rudder will completely change the destination of a large vessel, a small shift in your thinking can take you to a whole different place in your life.”

This is a great teaching mantra for the black belt instructor when dealing with junior students as well as insightful for the more senior black belt will realize that to change their own direction of enlightenment one must only slightly nudge their direction.

It is worth reading? Yes.

Will it be a 500 page studious text covering the nuances of a specific school of martial arts study? No.

But it will act as a guide for those wanting to hold the mirror of self reflection to their own face and provide a good discussion platform between teacher and student.

As a yogini, I'm always looking for other ways to combine mind, body and spirit. I'm not very familiar with the maritial arts, so this book was a nice introduction told with both the author's personal narrative as well as exemplars from stage and screen who I am already familiar. If you're looking for a new perspective to how our minds create our worlds, and our own prisons if we're not aware of our choices, this book does the trick without being preachy or sanctimonious. It also offers a broad enough overview to keep newbies like myself from feeling bogged down in technical jargon or processes that are unfamiliar.

Excellent book with practical steps for empowerment

I really enjoyed this book! It presents a good balance of success tips and real-life examples, with the underlying theme of becoming a martial arts master. While that is the theme, you don't need to know martial arts to benefit from this book. You can apply the "black belt mindset" to any area of your life, regardless of your age, background, or physical ability.

The engaging examples sprinkled throughout the chapters come from the author's life, from scientific studies, and from true-life stories of successful people who've overcome failure and obstacles to achieve their goals. These examples do a good job of illustrating the points made.

As for the mindset itself, it's explained through a process that encompasses every key element. The author expertly takes us from how the subconscious works for and against us, how our beliefs evolve and shape us, and how our fears develop, to how to develop new useful habits, how to persist through challenges, and how to achieve the transformation we want. But that's just the tip of the iceberg; there's much, much more here, all of it enlightening and useful.

My only complaint is that I found a few too many typos for my taste. But I was able to overlook these. The information itself is gold and the examples are compelling.

An enjoyable book truly worth reading, with the keys to true, lasting transformation.
