Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery, by Janet Singer, Seth Gillihan

Daniel Singer hadn’t eaten in a week. Hunched over with his head in his hands, he’d sit in his “safe” chair for hours, doing nothing but shaking, mumbling and moaning; he was in the throes of severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. Dan went from seven therapists to ten medications to a nine week stay at a world renowned residential treatment program. His parents worried he’d never again be able to function in society, or even worse, survive.

Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery is a mother’s account of the courage and perseverance of a young man who at times was hindered by the very people who were supposed to be helping him. It is a story of hope and the power of family, as well as a useful guide for all those whose lives have been touched by this often misunderstood and misrepresented disorder. Weaving expert commentary and useful information about OCD and its treatment throughout, the authors are able to offer not just a personal account of how the disorder can affect sufferers and families, but also a glimpse into the possibilities for diagnosis, clinical approaches, and successful outcomes. Today, thanks to Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy, one of the available treatments for OCD, Dan is a college graduate working in his chosen field and living life to the fullest. He is living proof that even those with the most severe cases of OCD can not only recover, but triumph.

Review
After witnessing strange behavior in her son, Dan, while visiting him at college, Singer first realized that he had OCD. Singer, now an advocate for OCD awareness, has crafted a touching account of her family's search for treatment . Each chapter covers a separate stage of their journey, from recognition of the disorder ('Everything Is Not Fine'), to seeking different avenues of help and treatments ('Looking For Help,' 'ERP to the Rescue'), to complications with Dan's residential treatment program ('A Pothole in the Road') and departure from the program ('The Crash,' 'Picking up the Pieces'), leading to his ultimate 'Triumph over OCD.' Deftly embedded throughout the Singers' journey are informative passages from co-author Gillihan, an assistant professor of psychology, that deftly mirror Singer's memoir narrative with clinical facts. For example, Gillihan explains 'What is OCD' after Singer recounts her realization that her son had the disorder, later discussing 'Odd Behavior in OCD' and 'Medication for OCD' when Singer describes Dan's problem behaviors and struggle with various medications. Eventually, supported by his loving family, Dan was able to overcome OCD through exposure and response prevention (ERP) treatment. Singer and Gillihan's differing backgrounds and perspectives complement each other for a book that will leave readers moved, as well as educated about the nature of a disorder and how to defeat it. (Publishers Weekly)

In Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery by Janet Singer and Dr. Seth J. Gillihan, the reader is introduced to Dan, a young man who truly meets the criteria for having OCD. . . .Being a witness to Janet Singer’s story and journey will have the reader laughing, crying, and sharing in her anger in dealing with professionals who lacked compassion and judgment. . . .This book would benefit any mental health professional, medical professional, or family dealing with a loved one with ODC, any OCD sufferer, and anyone who would like information on what it means to struggle and live with OCD. . . . The book offers hope and encouragement as well as valuable information in dealing with professionals in order not to feel dismissed. The authors stress the importance of finding a doctor who understands OCD and its effective treatment options and medication management. Overall [the book is] a deeply poignant account of a young man’s struggle and triumph with OCD and the support of his mother and family. (Psych Central)

Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery is her account of the courage and perserverance of a young man who at times was hindered by the very people who were supposed to be helping him. What makes the book unique is the expert commentary that is interwoven throughout. (Community Advocate)

Janet Singer has accomplished more in her book, Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery, than a hundred scientific publications filled with facts, figures, and charts. To live with OCD yourself or in your family, the ordinary human needs lay speak. Janet does that in her book with authenticity, emotion, and compassion. . . .Janet has done a tremendous favor for those living with OCD or with a loved one who has OCD. The picture offered is a realistic image of their family’s struggles with Dan’s illness and treatments. Janet does not spare anything in laying out the facts of their life, their struggles with the medical and psychological communities, their attempts to help Dan. Standing alongside and contributing to Janet’s book is Seth J. Gillihan, Ph.D., a clinical assistant professor of psychology in the psychiatry department at the University of Pennsylvania. The beauty of Dr. Gillihan’s contributions is found in their placement in the book. As Dan and his family face another crisis, Dr. Gillihan writes information on drugs, treatment plans, and other scientific information in lay terms. This balance between the realistic story and the medical information available provides a perfect resource based in truth for coping with and treating OCD. Janet Singer has written a poignant and powerful memoir plus a resource to guide others to an understanding of OCD and how to manage it. This book shares encouragement and enlightenment in equal measure, a powerful combination indeed. (Sherrey Meyer, Writer)

There are a growing number of OCD memoirs on the market...some of them paint astonishingly lucid pictures of what it’s like to live with OCD. But until now, no one has written about what it’s like to live with someone with OCD. In Overcoming OCD, Janet Singer has changed that. She’s offered the gift of her own experience to the millions of people who love somebody with OCD – people who are scared and confused and would really like someone to talk to about all of this. Because as Singer knows, we obsessive-compulsives can’t always explain ourselves. . . .How do you love a person like that? And how do you take care of yourself while you do? I’m not sure there are any final answers to questions like these – and I don’t think Janet Singer does either. But she loves her son and protects her family anyway – and in Overcoming OCD, she helps others see something about how they might too. (Matt Beiber, Writer)

It takes courage for a parent to tell the story of her adult child’s struggle with mental illness and his confusing, heart-rending path to recovery. In Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery, Janet Singer shares her son’s battle with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), from its onset during his freshman year of college, through senior year when he graduated. This is a story of the strong, young man, but for me, it is also the journey of a mother who refused to give up hope. . . .In Overcoming OCD, the author gives insight into the complexities of co-occurring disorders and the trial-and-error approach to medication. We see the tightrope Ms. Singer walks between advocating for her son and overstepping, and between following doctors’ orders and questioning their methods. . . .I recommend this book to anybody supporting a loved one in managing a mental illness. The reader will discover he is not alone, there are resources and help available, and most important, there is hope. (Toss the Typewriter)

I like to think of Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery as a love story, featuring the selfless love a parent has for a suffering and hurting child. In this case, it is the story of Janet and Gary Singer, and their college student son, Dan, who was struggling with severe OCD. . . .I love this book. I mean, I really love this book. It is very well written and flows easily through what was probably one of the most painful years of the Singer family's lives. I had a hard time putting the book down and read it in its entirety in a handful of sittings. . . .Throughout the book, Dr. Gillihan adds thoughtful and informative commentary abut OCD, and more importantly, treatment, including ERP and medication. His input is spot-on and adds a critically important component to the book. These are not throwaway or filler remarks. They are filled with solid information that sufferers and their families can use to guide them forward through the maze of battling OCD. . . .Overcoming OCD is a big win for me, and I will gladly recommend it. (71º & Sunny: One Christian's Odyssey Through Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)

[The book is a] compelling and moving read, which also has dots of dry and dark humour, both from Janet and Dan - even OCD sufferers can, on occasion, see the funny side of their plight! The book is co-authored by Seth Gillihan, who provides expert commentary and background information about the condition and its treatment, which is interspersed throughout the book in bite-sized chunks easily digested by the layman. . . .At the end, I had a lump in my throat, in spite of already knowing the outcome of Dan's journey, both from the book's title and as a follower of Janet's blog. His success in reclaiming his life is inspirational and proves that, no matter how badly affected you are by OCD, you can do the same. (The Reluctant Perfectionist)

I highly recommend Overcoming OCD, whether you have OCD, you treat OCD, or you have a loved one with OCD. Heck, I recommend it even if you’ve never even heard of OCD. (Alison Dotson: Author, OCD Advocate, book lover)

I really didn’t want to put this book down after I started it. It’s inspirational, absorbing, and just a plain good story. Parents with children who have OCD would particularly benefit and would be reminded that they are not alone in their journey. The beneficial role that family support can play is well illustrated. I would also highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about OCD and to those with OCD. (Bringing Along OCD)

What I loved about this book: It realistically portrays the hell of OCD. Nothing is watered down in this book. Families are going to be able to recognize immediately that this family truly understands the torture of OCD. . . .[and] Janet’s heartbreaking narrative is balanced with Dr. Seth Gillihan’s forthright explanations. I like that readers are given both one family’s personal experience, but that the book still dials back and addresses things more clinically and more generally. . . .I hope you'll read this important book. (Jackie Lea Sommers)

Janet Singer’s book Overcoming OCD is a perfect blend of anecdote, taken from Singer’s own experiences, mixed with professional advice from OCD expert Seth J Gillihan. Anyone who doesn’t think that OCD is a serious illness needs to read Dan’s story. . . .As the parent of a child suffering from OCD, I found the book to be incredibly helpful, affirmative and informative. The book also includes quite a bit of information about the different types of treatments for OCD including the different types of medications that are often provided, Cognative Behavioural Therapy (CBT) including the all-important Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), residential and therapeutic treatments, and other resources. This information is presented in easy to read sidebars, with lots of references and links, in a way that aligns with Dan’s story. Overcoming OCD provides the full trajectory of the Singer family experience from the point they learned about Dan’s OCD to his graduation from college. Though there is a wealth of OCD information and resources in the book which will be helpful to anyone with an involvement in OCD including sufferers, families, doctors, and therapists, this is really a book pitched at parents or carers of OCD sufferers, an often thankless, painful and difficult role that demands an intense learning curve. Not only does Overcoming OCD provide advice, support, and hope to parents, but it also talks to some of the struggles that OCD puts on other siblings, the pitfalls to watch out for in certain types of treatments, things (like enabling) to be careful of, and above all, the importance of remaining positive even when the situation looks intractable. Perhaps most important of all, is that this book speaks in very candid and open ways about a misunderstood and often silent mental illness. Overcoming OCD is an important book, not just because it is a valuable resource full of information on the types of treatment that can help OCD sufferers like Dan, but also because it offers much needed wisdom and hindsight to the families of suffers. It is only through open discourse and information that mental illnesses like OCD can become understood enough so that mistreatment becomes the exception rather than the norm, and so that sufferers feel comfortable seeking the treatment they so desperately need. Janet Singer and Seth J. Gillihan are to be congratulated on producing such a unique and powerful guide that will hopefully change public perception about this illness and offer help and hope to many. (The Compulsive Reader)

This book by Singer and Gillihan is a remarkable story of a mother and son's inspiring chronicle against OCD. Singer's story clearly conveys the pain of having a loved one struggle with OCD, yet inspires those in their fight by illustrating how this family triumphed. Beyond being compelling and inspiring, this text successfully educates the reader about the nature and treatment of OCD. (Eric A. Storch, Ph.D., professor and All Children's Hospital Guild Endowed Chair, University of South Florida; clinical director, Rogers Behavioral Health - Tampa Bay)

Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery is an inspiring story of a young man’s determination and courage to free himself from the limitations and terrors of his obsessive-compulsive disorder. Whether you suffer with the condition or whether you love someone who suffers with the condition, you will find something in this book that will encourage and enlighten. (Michael A. Tompkins, Ph.D., San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy; author of OCD: A Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (2012))

Overcoming OCD offers something new to the “my true OCD story” library by highlighting the complexity of helping a family member with the disorder. Singer and Gillihan invite us into the world of an OCD family by seamlessly combining heartfelt memories with concrete clinical facts. The book reads like a true crime novel with the hero being a mother who will stop at nothing to help her son through a maze of mental illness and those who treat it, a theme that surely resonates with more families than we know. (Jon Hershfield, MFT, psychotherapist and co-author of The Mindfulness Workbook for OCD: A Guide for Overcoming Obsessions and Compulsions with Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)

This book is a remarkable achievement; it is a poignant and powerful memoir as well as a valuable resource for understanding and managing OCD. (Paul M. Rosen, Ph.D., author of TLC: Talking Listening Connecting with Your Kids)

I learned a lot from this important book, in which we read a mother's first-person account of her anguish and eventual triumph as she attempts to navigate the confusing world of treatment options for a college-age son stricken with severe OCD. Her first-person account is beautifully balanced by the voice of Dr. Gillihan, an expert in OCD, who provides the reader with additional information on what treatments are available, which are backed by science, and what to expect when engaging in them.

There are few books in which we read so intimately of a parents' struggle to care for a child with OCD. There are fewer still that detail this struggle when the child is actually a young adult, leaving the nest, and the parent must strike the right balance between providing structure and care while respecting a son's growing need for independence. This book will benefit and educate those suffering from OCD, those who love them, and those who treat them in clinical settings. (Katherine K. Dahlsgaard, Ph.D., Lead Psychologist, ABC: The Anxiety Behaviors Clinic, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia)

Authors Janet Singer and Seth Gillihan’s contribution in Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery will be both valuable and relatable to OCD suffers and family members. The personal story of Dan’s brave journey and alternating treatment information make this book inspiring and informative. (Stacey Kuhl Wochner, LCSW, psychotherapist in private practice, Los Angeles (www.ocdspecialists.com))

Janet Singer and Seth Gillihan's Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery is a touching and valuable book. In its best moments, it captures a mother's struggles to understand her son's OCD and support him through a long and difficult journey, with grace and forthrightness. Through a series of clear and well-referenced sidebars, the book also provides concrete information about OCD and its treatment that is of great value. Every person with OCD experiences it differently, and Dan's journey, as experienced by his mother, will resonate with some patients and their families more than with others. But the clarity and simple humanity of the story will be a great help to many individuals and many families who have been touched by OCD, and by mental illness more broadly, letting them know that others have experienced what they are going through, and have flourished. (Christopher Pittenger, MD, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and assistant professor of psychology, Child Study Center; director, Yale OCD Research Clinic; and associate director, Neuroscience Research Training Program)

This is a touching and genuine account of a family and their experience with obsessive-compulsive disorder. The book is revealing and brings the reader through a range of emotions. It is well researched and provides an informative account of how one can recover from OCD with professional treatment and the support of family. I highly recommend this book to anyone coping with OCD. (Jim Lemli, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist/Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist)

Overcoming OCD is a moving account of one family's experience with obsessive compulsive disorder. From the earliest signs of illness to triumphant recovery, Singer provides a mother's perspective on the devastating impact of OCD and the inspiring nature of her son's resilience and perseverence. Gillihan's expert voice on the science and treatment of OCD adds richness and depth to this unflinching narrative. The personal and clinical perspectives on OCD are woven together to produce an intimate, informative and ultimately inspiring account of illness, love, and recovery. (Matthew O. Hurford, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services)

Compassionate and intelligent look at OCD
By Nancy
Kudos to Janet Singer for addressing such a delicate subject with compassion, intelligence, and yes, even a little humor.

In Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery, Ms. Singer provides a mother’s perspective of her son Dan’s struggles with his illness. From initial diagnosis to the success of Exposure and Response Prevention therapy, she chronicles the heartbreak, frustration, fear, and uncertainty that Dan and his family suffered through. And yet, a mother’s unyielding belief in his strength and thus his ability to recover from such a debilitating disease always shined through. It is a story written from the heart.

The book chronicles Dan’s road to recovery. Inpatient treatment. Medication. More medication. Counseling. Decisions. Letting go. Taking control. Enabling. Acknowledging. Medication withdrawal. The complex dance of doctors, patient and parents trying to figure out what is best, what is right. It reads like a novel, but it educates like a primer. With the help of thoughtful commentary by Seth Gillihan, the reader is provided with a greater understanding of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, its treatment and how family and loved ones can help.

Parenting an adult child with a chronic and difficult illness
By penpen
One of the arts of parenting grown children--particularly emerging adults who are just getting their independence-footing--is to keep from interfering in their lives, to practice detachment parenting, to become an advisory parent instead of one involved in their everyday decisions. When a child becomes seriously ill, how do we walk that line: making sure they are getting appropriate care and still letting them be in charge of their lives? Writing in the first person, Janet Singer addresses these issues in "Overcoming OCD." While it was written to be a helpful tool for other parents whose children or loved ones are ill with OCD, the book is also about the struggle between child and parent, for the adult child's need for independence and the parent's obligation to know and act on what's best for their child.

Singer is frank about the emotional roller-coaster of parenting a 19-year-old child whose illness could curtail his lifelong dreams and ambitions (since childhood, her son has wanted to be an animator; the art college he was attending did not allow for a break in the course series) and his ability to live a fulfilling and independent life--to say nothing of enjoying the pleasurable socializing of college life.
Who makes decisions about his future. Is it the young man under the influence of his therapists, or his parents? In Janet's case, the therapists specializing in her son's OCD condition (at a residential facility), recommended he not return to art college, arguing that returning to school would take away from the continuity of his recovery--even though not returning meant he would have to give up on his ambition to be an animator.
Her son had voluntarily entered the residential facility during the summer to undergo intensive therapy so he could return to college in the fall. Wavering on that goal when under the care (and influence) of his therapists, he told his parents he was dropping out of college--he wanted to relieve himself of the pressure to keep up with the course work and concentrate on recovery. At the same time, though, he wanted to go back to the college town and live with his friends and roommates in a house they had all rented. "I need to be independent," he told his parents. "I want my freedom."

A good chunk of the book revolves around the role of the parents in this decision ("who knows the whole person better?" a psychologist-adviser reminds Singer.), the emotional ups and downs of deciding whether to intervene and how.

It's her honesty about the struggle with her ill son and her belief in his future that hit home. In one way or another, we have all been there.

A Guidebook for Living with OCD Written in Lay Language with Medical Tips Provided by a Psychologist -- Amazing Book!
By Sherrey Meyer
Janet Singer has accomplished more in her book, Overcoming OCD: A Journey to Recovery, than a hundred scientific publications filled with facts, figures, and charts. To live with OCD yourself or in your family, the ordinary human needs lay speak. Janet does that in her book with authenticity, emotion, and compassion.

Janet lives knowing her adult son has OCD and is challenged in many ways to cope and engage in a normal existence. Most frustrating to Janet and her husband, Gary, are the many attempts by professionals at treating Dan's symptoms. Trying one drug after the other, sometimes prescribing one on top of the other. Often there were interactions between drugs which were unbearable for Dan. Despite their conversations with his doctors, Janet and Gary never seemed to be able to get through to the medical community that they really know who Dan is.

In my opinion, Janet has done a tremendous favor for those living with OCD or with a loved one who has OCD. The picture offered is a realistic image of their family's struggles with Dan's illness and treatments. Janet does not spare anything in laying out the facts of their life, their struggles with the medical and psychological communities, their attempts to help Dan.

Standing alongside and contributing to Janet's book is Seth J. Gillihan, Ph.D., a clinical assistant professor of psychology in the psychiatry department at the University of Pennsylvania. The beauty of Dr. Gillihan's contributions is found in their placement in the book.

My Recommendation:

Overcoming OCD is a story of struggle for Dan and for his parents. Janet and Dan's love for him and their wish to improve his life is palpable. In sharing their story, Janet has gifted to many a measure of hope in coming to terms with OCD and its many crises. Anyone living with loved ones suffering OCD, or who know someone with OCD, or who could give a copy to a local library will help spread Janet's words an unknown number of people may benefit from the Singers' story. Share a ray of hope, a glimmer of better days, and new and innovative treatments.

you can learn to use food on occasion to feel better
you can feel in control (and have a treat)
you don’t have to feel bad or guilty about emotional eating
you don’t need to completely eliminate emotional eating to be healthy

In his new book, Mindful Emotional Eating, psychologist Pavel Somov has given a “cultural permission” to eat emotionally -- with mindfulness-based tools to do so in moderation and without self-judgment and self-loathing. Somov proposes that emotional eating is a legitimate form of self-care and teaches clients and clinicians how to “leverage more coping per calorie.” Numerous original exercises and meditative techniques will guide a more conscious alliance with food during moments of emotional distress.

Review
"Don't be fooled by the seeming contradiction in the title of Mindful Emotional Eating. The book makes the case to troubled eaters and their treaters that if we re going to turn to food when we re stressed or distressed, we best do it not with guilt, shame, self-hatred, or detachment from our bodies and their cravings, but with a keen mindfulness that will satisfy our appetites and foster emotional well-being." --Karen R. Koenig, LCSW, M.Ed., psychotherapist, eating coach, and author of Outsmarting Overeating.

"This wonderfully creative book teaches us that we don't need willpower to overcome our unruly eating habits, but mindfulness skill power. It shows that freedom doesn't come from stopping emotional eating, but when we learn how to eat emotionally in moderation, more effectively and without self-judgement or self-loafing. Pavel Somov has put together a fun mindfulness toolbox for not only healthcare professionals, but anyone who struggles with emotional eating." --Alexa Frey, Co-Founder, The Mindfulness Project, London

Pavel's Mindful Emotional Eating is a gem of a toolkit that will be invaluable both to individuals seeking a mindful eating self-help option and to practitioners looking to infuse more mindfulness into their work..." --foreword by Linda Craighead, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology & Director of Clinical training, Emory University, author of The Appetite Awareness Workbook.

"Dr. Pavel Somov's newest book, Mindful Emotional Eating, offers individuals struggling with eating concerns a revolutionary guidebook for developing a satisfying, enjoyable relationship to food. The book challenges prevailing notions by de-pathologizing emotional eating and affirms that emotional eating is one among many ways that we can care for ourselves. His humanistic harm reduction approach helps people shift from demonizing emotional eating to affirming that we all eat for emotional reasons. The positive change we seek is from mindless to mindful moderate emotional eating. His mindful emotional eating (MEE) process is the antidote to the shame, blame, self-attacks and rebellious over-eating that characterize mindless emotional eating. MEE empathizes with people s need to self-soothe and empowers people to choose how they want to do it. His Jumpstart is filled with inspiring ideas and practical strategies for developing moderate emotional eating. Ultimately this book helps us become aware, self-compassionate and empowered with the confidence and skills to choose how to best care for ourselves in each moment. Quite a lot to get from one small book! I highly recommend it to practitioners and people with eating concerns." --Andrew Tatarsky, PhD, leading expert in Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy

"Pavel G. Somov provides an ingenious, non-judgmental, mindful approach to emotional eating (this includes ALL eating) that is based on skillpower, not willpower. In this guide for clinicians, he gives specific step-by-step instructions for how to eat mindfully that fully empowers clients to feel good about eating and changes the paradigm from deprivation and guilt to self-acceptance and self-control. He breaks down this process into tasks, language, narratives and homework to use in each clinical session with clients. This book gives you everything you need to help clients change their mindset about eating and to apply effective mindfulness skills to the realm of cravings, over eating, binge eating, nighttime eating, weight management and eating driven by specific emotions. This might be the last book on helping with emotional eating that you need to buy." ----Debra Burdick, LCSWR, BCN, #1 best-selling author of Mindfulness Skills Workbook for Clinicians and Clients and Mindfulness Skills for Kids & Teens

"Let s be honest. We all eat with emotions involved in the process. We eat for survival, for comfort, for energy, for relief and for pleasure and all those motivations include an emotional component. The path to health is not to deny the role of emotion in eating. Rather, the task is to make intentional decisions about our eating patterns. In this accessible and compassionate book, Pavel Somov shows you path to breaking unhealthy eating patterns. He offers clear insights, skills and practices you need to be a more mindful eater. By following his guidance, you will not only make eating decisions that better support your health; you will also feel better about yourself and your relationship to food. As an added bonus, you will develop mindfulness skills that will be so helpful in many other areas of your life." ----Terry Fralich, LCPC, JD, author of Cultivating Lasting Happiness, 2nd Edition and The Five Core Skills of Mindfulness

"Mindful Emotional Eating, Pavel Somov's latest book, is a lovely combination of self compassion and behavioral strategies to help people with the cycle of shame and further emotional eating when food is used as a coping skill. He normalizes our use of food to self soothe, and gives us step by step instructions on how to calm our minds and bodies before, and during eating so that we can make more mindful, intentional choices. I will recommend this book to my weight loss clients."
- Ellen Resnick, Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at UCSF, Psychotherapist and Director at Center for Thoughtful Weight Loss.

“Let me be crystal clear: The goal of this program is nothing less than to learn to leverage more coping per calorie, to help you and/or your clients to learn to become effective, mindful emotional eaters, and to finally re-integrate emotional eating back into our inevitably emotional lives – with unconditional self-acceptance instead of that toxic heartburn of shame and guilt that has been eating at us for years whenever we would turn to food for some self-directed TLC.”

Who can't fall in love with the book already! As a registered dietitian, I agree that the world need less of the “toxic heartburn of shame and guilt...” Somov continues to offer the reader a very compassionate voice that mindful eating can be an effective tool to use when eating to cope. Dr. Somov explains what I think most emotional eaters have known forever - that emotional eating is just another way of coping.

As I read the book I found myself chuckling as I tried some of his suggestions, like a tongue lock or 10 relaxation combos or “mmmm” before I took a bite. Sure, I looked silly but I found my curiosity piqued - would this work? How? Why? And once the question was out of my brain, sure enough Dr. Somov explained why it worked using research and clinical experience.

Yet many of my clients need some “Rules” to follow. To them, the whole idea of mindful eating feels a little bit too “woo-woo”. If a lack of structure is a concern for you don’t worry, there are ten MEE Rules of Engagement to follow. Number 10 stood out for me, “After eating to cope, regardless of the quantitative or qualitative outcome, accept emotional eating as a legitimate coping choice, not as a coping failure and congratulate yourself on yet another courageously attempted precedent of harm reduction self-care. “ What a wonderful counter to the many critical voices that have gathered from the endless restrictive food fads and body shaming programs as The Biggest Loser.

I am however, guilty of binge-reading Mindful Emotional Eating, Mindfulness Skills to Control Cravings, Eat in Moderation and Optimize Coping and like an empty bag of chips, I was disappointed that I had reached the final chapter. I confess there are simply too many ideas and suggestions for self-compassion for me to digest in one reading. I would encourage any reader to grab a highlighter and a few post-it notes to flag the ideas and suggestions that resinate within you. This third addition to Dr. Pavel Somov’s growing list of mindful eating books is sure to be a classic for anyone seeking a more compassionate way of understanding emotional eating.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in finding ...
By Theresa G.
Pavel Somov's book, Mindful Emotional Eating, is a refreshing way to look at ... eating! Pavel correctly (and without judgement) identifies how all eating is an emotional response regardless if we eat because we are hungry; in celebration; to soothe our jangles nerves; or simply to ease hurt feelings. Mindful Emotional Eating strips away damaging labels such as 'good' and 'bad' eating and, instead, addresses the benefits of MINDFUL eating which, in turn, leads to a healthier mind-and-body connection.

Mindful Emotional Eating provides the reader with easy-to-follow strategies, techniques, and an over-all understanding to help us become more aware (more mindful!) of our eating. Make no mistake, this is not a book about deprivation or denial. Quite the opposite! There are no food restrictions, counting of calories, or 'wrong' foods. Instead, Pavel Somov's Mindful Emotional Eating helps you to become more aware, more mindful --- more present -- of what you are eating; what you are savoring as you are eating, and why.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in finding out more about what motivates them; for anyone who is trying to become more aware of their eating habits, incentives and triggers; and for anyone who may struggle with so-called 'good' and 'bad' eating habits.

A Breath of Fresh Air!
By A. Bross
Dr. Pavel Somov's approach to mindful emotional eating is a breath of fresh air! The diet industry has very effectively placed a wedge in between our minds and our bodies - teaching us to be reliant on their food plans and causing us to grow more and more out of touch with our own eating. The multi-billion dollar industry sets us up for inevitable failure and then capitalizes on it when we are once again told to believe another diet is the answer.
Mindful Emotional Eating is the next step in the evolution of truly healthy and connected eating. It dares to say and accept that emotional eating is a part of life, and that mindful emotional eating can be one of the tools we use in life to care for ourselves and cope with our emotions. People have been using food in this way for a long, long time - but our acceptance of this has lagged far behind. The goal no longer needs to be the elimination of emotional eating but instead the thoughtful, mindful use of this technique as but one of the many coping strategies we use in our lives.
The book doesn't stop with a theoretical shift - it provides a structured, concrete plan for helping clients/readers achieve the shift from mindless to mindful emotional eating. It takes away the shame and despair many of us feel if and when we eat other than for hunger. A wonderful resource!

A realistic solution to comfort eaters
By Louise Anne Sultana
I really like this book, as it's down to earth and the author is sympathetic and realistic with those, like me, who can only relieve their emotional distress by eating. Previously all I'd come across was 'if you want to eat because you're unhappy, bored, etc' distract yourself, take a bath, phone a friend, go for a walk'. It has worked for boredom, because as long as I'm aware that I'm bored rather than hungry and don't eat out of habit, like for example when watching TV, I can talk myself out of eating. But when I'm sad no amount of distraction works, rather any attempts I make rebound on me as I end up stuffing my face as fast as possible to run away from the voice in my head that is screaming at me that I shouldn't be eating. Dr. Somov's approach is a welcome change and felt like balm on a wound. He actually tells me to use food to calm myself down and feel better. The difference is that if I manage to take this approach on board I can get more 'comfort per calorie' and soothe my emotions without overeating, something which leads to even more distress.

Silence -- Not What You Think
By John R. Gigliotti
The latest book from Zen master, Thich Nhat Hahn, deals with the issue of silence from mindfulness. Not silence as the absence of sound. But silence as the quieting of one's mind while being mindful of the breath, walking, or silence itself. Useful exercises can be done while reading the quick, 189-page book. Come home to yourself, without the constant thinking, and be alive in this beautiful and precious present moment. Deep bows to Thich. Get well soon, sir.

I was looking for mental silence, and I found it. Your learning style will determine how much you like this.
By Joseph W Rabb
I picked this book because silence was what I was looking for and I found it in this book. It is a book on the subject of mindfulness. To skip to the point, if you have a learning style that requires structure, you can find a better book. If you have a learning style where you pick up things in bursts of activity whenever you can devote time to the subject, you will like this book.

I discovered mindfulness after watching a video on YouTube with Jon Kabat Zin hosting a session he held at Google. I picked up his book Full Catastrophe Living. It read to me like enthusiastic 8 week boot camp that you have to follow or you feel like your doing it wrong in spite of the authors best efforts to remind you that you cannot truly do it wrong. I don't see this necessary as wrong approach. I've seen there are 8 week classes out there and my suspicion this would work better as a class rather than self taught. This would be the structured approach I was referring too and as a result I recommend this book for those sorts of learners.

Ultimately I wasn't really interested in meditation. I was looking for a way to quiet my world. They are many paths to achieve the quiet I was looking for, that I'm certain. So far none had seemed to work. Never has a book had a title so appropriately for what I was looking for. So naturally I snatched it up. I found Hanh's methods to be simpler to apply than Zinn's. They didn't feel like homework assignments. There was no suggested pacing to imply that after so many weeks you have everything you need. Rather than encouraging one to set aside 30 minutes a day, as you progress through the book you eventually learn enough to practice mindfulness all day so should you chose. Hanh trying to help you shut off the Non Stop Radio in your head and 30 minutes a day doesn't help. You need a method that you can use whenever you need to shut that radio off. This felt more natural and was more useful. It was more helpful as I could practice this not only when ever I wanted, but whenever I needed.

Green language describes what is real in our lives rather than labels or judges any event, process, or person. The use of Green Language activates the prefrontal cortex and related areas in the human brain and steers the attention of the speakers and hearers into the be-here-now moment, the moment where choices for goal-direction action are made. To live Green is to live "owning," aware that I am responsible (response-able) for my own choices while fostering conditions for others to experience the same awareness. This results in one being "in-control" rather than being "control-ing". The Victim-Rescuer-Persecutor (Red Language) approach to speaking and thinking activates the amygdala in the human brain to see the world and oneself in an on-going flight-or-fight drama of right vs. wrong, good vs. bad, should vs. should not. The focus of 'VRP' thinking and speaking is to "be right" and dominate rather than to "be" and reach consensus.

Love it! This is a book to read many times. Green language applies to every aspect of our personal and professional lives. I believe this is a way to use language to make your life a most excellent experience.
John explains how to make your thoughts and language to others work for an outcome that wins over both parties.
Exclude victims and persecution from your life by adopting the techniques explained in the text.
An easy read that grows your understanding on how the brain works and how you can make each transaction with others have a happy outcome with freedom of hurt and a emphasis on honesty.Take the effort to dip your brain into understanding the shortcomings of the victim-rescuer-persecutor language model and grasp the understanding of the awesomeness of being able to use your thinking abilities to decode language into real observations, feeling, thought and wants.
This text explains how to work language and grow your internal way of thinking and using language to enable outcome you are happy about.
I believe if you teach yourself to use the talent of "decode and paraphrase" your life will be enriched and your communications with others will be awesome.

An eating disorder masterpiece
By Mike
I am acquainted with this authors first book entitled "THE GREATEST DIET ON EARTH" of which is still available on Amazon and a GREAT read. She goes into great detail as to what foods that we see and eat every day that contain what minerals & vitamins and how beneficial they are to us & what foods contain these elements. This book alone must have taken much individual research to categorize all this information. I felt that the $15.95 that I originally purchased the book for of 148 pages was a real bargain for the price and helped my wife & I to make the correct decisions about what foods to purchase. Her new book about Binge Eating Disorder is another BEST Seller. What a great author that is concerned about what we consume in our bodies. Thanks Karen. ~Mike

The Little Pocket Book of Mindfulness: Don't dwell on the past or worry about the future, simply BE in the present with mindfulness meditat

By adopting the ancient Buddhist practice of mindfulness meditation, we can learn to pay attention to our daily experience and become more contented and fulfilled by daily activities.

Many of us find it difficult to simply appreciate the present moment. We either dwell on the past or worry about the future, moving mindlessly from one activity to the next. When we are not being mindful, we miss out on small moments that are often incredibly valuable – be it a beautiful park that we walk through on our journey to work or the taste and texture of a delicious meal. In mindfulness meditation we pay attention to our ongoing experience whether it is pleasant – such as appreciating a beautiful sunny day; unpleasant – a disagreement with a loved one; or neutral – doing household chores. This 'Little Pocket Book' is the perfect introduction to mindfulness and is packed with easy-to-follow tips and suggestions that will allow you to incorporate simple mindful moments into your daily life.
