unless you are good at releasing your demons

I really don't get it. While I agree that you need to find pleasure in eating and release yourself from societal pressures, this book could have been written in about 3 pages. Or just copy part of my last sentence. What is missing is telling people who really struggle with body and food issues how to release those feelings and experience pleasure. Some people just don't know how to do this! The book basically tells you that if you don't experience pleasure in everything you do, then you will never experience weight loss. So...unless you are good at releasing your demons, this book is useless. It went into the garbage.

One of my pet peeves is when naturally skinny people (or people who lose 20 lbs one time in their life) try to tell people with actual weight or body image issues just how EASY it is (oh, and hey, now it's PLEASURABLE) to lose weight. POOF! Gimme a break.
To be fair, I do truly appreciate this author's unique, lovely energy, and her attempts at conveying a positive message, but this book is NOT for people with significant weight loss goals, or people who have complex histories with their relationship to weight, food, and body image. While she does offer a refreshing approach to getting in touch with your body and relating to it and food, in pleasurable ways, this is NOT a realistic approach for those of us who have struggled with obesity and emotional eating issues for most of our lives. The Mindfulness Eating movement and TONS of exercise is far more effective for long term positive lifestyle changes, in my opinion.
This book may be most useful for those of you who need to lose a few pounds, or if you are already happy with your weight and just want to learn about how to have a fun new relationship to food and your body. This book is basically one great idea, with a brilliant marketing strategy and tons of friends (my bet would be friends without significant weight concerns) to write 5-star reviews.... But sadly there is no magical pleasure pill to weight loss other than: Eat less and move more. Of course we can try to find pleasure in that process, and that is a lovely idea. But for most of us with actual issues, the journey is not pain-free. Or pleasurable.

This should be titled Pleasurable Living

After reading this book, I think it should be called Pleasurable Living because it is not just about weight loss. Jena covers how to apply this philosophy to all aspects of the reader's life. I really enjoyed her style of teaching. She is lovely and her message feels authentic and heart felt. I visited her website a few times when deciding to buy this book and she appears to live her message. I enjoyed how she used her own life examples to illustrate various points throughout the book. Her sensual nature and confidence are infectious.
To be clear this is not a diet! Pleasurable eating is about slowing down and chewing your food very thoroughly while savoring each bite. It's about checking IN rather than checking OUT when eating. It's about gauging your hunger and satiety levels after each bite and truly listening to your body and her needs. I could see this definitely taking some practice after years of practically inhaling my food. Pleasurable eating also accounts for food allergies and sensitivities by teaching the reader to "listen" to their body's response to food. If a food upsets your system in any way, don't eat that food. Pleasurable eating frees you from diet rules, but it shouldn't free you from common sense (i.e. I am pre diabetic so it's not ok for me to start eating any food that raises my blood sugar just because I do it mindfully).
I highly enjoyed reading this book. I have read many diet books and done as many diets and, now in my thirties, I've started venturing into this world of intuitive eating. Jena includes some tips, practices and recipes, but if you're looking for a how to or exact plan then you will be disappointed. This is more of a philosophy that will require some soul searching and work on the reader's part. Some of the practices or thoughts are unconventional so read with an open mind. I have learned a lot about myself and my body by opening my mind and my heart and trying some of the suggestions that I otherwise would have never thought of doing.
I especially enjoyed the Pleasurable Movement section. Jena emphasizes the need for play in the reader's life. I used to dance and sing a lot, but now I have such a long to do list that those activities had long been forgotten. However, after reading, I set aside 10 minutes each day to dance and sing and it was so much fun. My daughter absolutely loved it and we usually end up keeping the tv off and sing while we make dinner instead of watching tv. I liked the way Jena defines true pleasure vs. counterfeit pleasure. Before reading this, most of what I thought of as pleasurable (soda, candy, baked goods, etc.) are not really true pleasures. Jena helped me see that my body does not find those things to be pleasurable when they make her stomach hurt or cause her to gain weight. Weight gain is just another way my body is trying to communicate that something is wrong.
This book will also teach the reader that you have to feel your emotions rather than numb them out with food. It may be uncomfortable at first to have to come face to face with your sadness, anger, depression, or whatever emotion you're feeling at the time, but it is necessary so that you stop depending on food to get through life.
I can't say that I've lost weight yet because I haven't weighed myself, but I know my clothes are looser and I feel happier. I look forward to rereading Pleasurable Weight Loss and to continue putting what I learn from it into practice.
