This is the story of my life as a doctor and a scientist. Despite a youthful ambition to become a jazz musician, I eventually studied medicine and became a medical research scientist, taking up appointments in Germany, Austria and finally in England. My reverence for the pursuit of truth through the application of scientific methods, coupled with a growing interest in the history of medicine during the Nazi era, did not always endear me to my professional colleagues. At the time I was appointed to the world's first chair in alternative medicine, this was an area of health care that had never been studied systematically, and was almost entirely dominated by outspokenly evangelic promoters and enthusiasts ― among them, famously, HRH Prince Charles ― many of whom exhibited an overtly hostile, anti-scientific attitude towards the objective study of their favoured therapies. Clashes were inevitable, but the sheer ferocity with which advocates of alternative medicine would go in order to protect their field from scrutiny came as a profound surprise. This memoir provides a unique insight into the cutthroat politics of academic life and offers a sobering reflection on the damage already done by pseudoscience in the field of medicine.

Review
"It should be required reading for everyone interested in medicine – without exception."
(Pan Pantziarka AntiCancer.org.uk)"Ernst isn't just an academic - he's also an accomplished writer and skilled communicator. He puts over some quite complex ideas without resorting to jargon and I felt informed without ever struggling to understand, despite being a non-scientist. I was pulled into the story of his life and read most of the book in one sitting... I was impressed by what Ernst had to say and the way in which he said it."
(Sue Magee The Bookbag)"Edzard Ernst is a living legend... The book is easy to read and hard to put down. I would particularly recommend it to anyone, with an open mind, who is interested in the truth or otherwise of CAM."
(Loretta Marron Australasian Science)"Ernst's book is a reminder of the need to have the courage to tell the truth as you understand it, and fight your corner against those in authority, while never losing a compassion for patients and a commitment to winning the debate. "
(Robin Walsh Spiked!)"If you want a true measure of the man, buy Edzard Ernst's memoir A Scientist in Wonderland, which the Imprint Academic press have just released. It would be worth reading [even] if the professor had never been the victim of a royal vendetta."
(Nick Cohen The Spectator)"[T]his ferociously frank autobiography... [is] a clarion call for medical ethics."
(Barbara Kiser Nature)"If you have any interest whatsoever in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), Edzard Ernst's new book A Scientist in Wonderland is a must-read… Long may this man speak truth unto power!"
(Chris French Skeptical Inquirer)"In his new book, A Scientist In Wonderland: A Memoir Of Searching For Truth And Finding Trouble, no one from the world of alternative medicine is safe from Professor Edzard Ernst's firing line."
(Katherine Keogh Mail Online)"A Scientist in Wonderland is more than an autobiography and I'm not sure I can do justice to the riches to be found in its pages. Sometimes it’s reminiscent of a black comedy, other times it’s almost too painful to read."
(Maria MacLachlan Skepticat)"This is a deeply moving and deeply disturbing book yet written with a light touch, humour and self-deprecation."
(Michael Baum Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine)'Ernst's A Scientist in Wonderland is entertainingly written and, like his professional life, challenging. Some of it is unashamed diatribe. Many will find the attitudes expressed by the author to be offensive. Others will regard Ernst as a hero and a martyr for evidence-based medicine based upon scientific rigour… A Scientist in Wonderland is an absorbing and personal account of the life of an influential figure in the passionate and divisive contemporary conflict between conventional and alternative medicine… It is well worth reading.'
(Ian Freckelton QC Journal of Law and Medicine)"[F]or all its trenchant arguments about evidence-based science, the second half of A Scientist in Wonderland remains a very human memoir, and Ernst's account of the increasingly personal nature of the attacks he faced when speaking to CAM practitioners and advocacy groups is disturbing… Ben Goldacre's 2012 book Bad Pharma created a storm via its exposure of the pharmaceutical industry’s unhealthy links with mainstream medicine. Ernst’s book deserves to do the same for the quackery trading under the name of complementary and alternative medicine."
(Helen Bynum Times Higher Education)"A Scientist in Wonderland is a rather droll, quick read… [and] it's an effective antidote to New Age nonsense, pseudo-science and old-fashioned quackery."
(Robbie Millen The Times)"This is no dry autobiography, but a compelling account of a seeker after truth dicing with the dark forces of un-reason and self-interest… Ernst's book is a testament to determination and integrity… This slim volume deserves a place on the bookshelf of every scientist and politician with an interest in healthcare, every medical practitioner and every camist with a conscience."
(Richard Rawlins The Skeptical Intelligencer)"The writing in A Scientist in Wonderland is clear and engaging. It combines good storytelling with important insights about medicine, science, and analytic thinking. Despite all the troubles Ernst encountered, I found his story to be inspirational. I enthusiastically recommend the book to scientists, health professionals, and laypersons who like to see nonsense and mendacity exposed to the light of reason."
(William M. London James Randi Educational Foundation)"This engaging book is a memoir by a medical researcher whose passion for discovering the truth about untested therapies eventually forced him out of his job… [This] highly readable book concentrates on fact rather than emotion. It should be required reading for anyone interested in medical research."
(Andrews Haynes The Pharmaceutical Journal)"Edzard Ernst is one of those rare people who dare to question their own beliefs, look at the evidence without bias, and change their minds… In addition to being a memoir, Dr. Ernst's book is a paean to science… He shows how misguided ideas, poor reasoning, and inaccurate publicity have contributed to the spread of alternative medicine… This is a well-written, entertaining book that anyone would enjoy reading and that advocates of alternative medicine should read: they might learn a thing or two about science, critical thinking, honesty, and the importance of truth."

A must read, especially for those who practice alt med
By Britt Hermes
Ezard Ernst’s recent memoir A Scientist in Wonderland: a memoir of searching for truth and finding trouble is an insightful and inspirational autobiography that, not surprisingly, has subjected Ernst to continued venomous attacks by proponents of alternative medicine.
“Over the years,” Ernst writes, “I had to get used to an incessant drumbeat of hostile criticism, aggression and even personal attacks.”
And the band plays on.
I first heard of Ernst from his 2008 book Trick or Treatment? Alternative medicine on trial, co-authored by Simon Singh. This book quite literally changed my life by providing me with an unbiased critique of different therapies in alternative medicine. At the time of reading Trick or Treatment? I was a naturopathic doctor in the throes of deciding if I wanted to continue practicing naturopathy after witnessing despicable, unethical and incompetent behavior by licensed naturopathic doctors. Ernst and Singh provided me with the confidence of knowing that leaving the field of naturopathic medicine was the best moral decision I could make.
Now, Ernst has once again helped me through another watershed moment: his memoir has reaffirmed my decision to not just leave naturopathy behind, but to also publicly speak out against the education, licensing, and practice of naturopathic doctors in the United States.
Ernst begins his memoir with descriptions of his childhood and exposures to alternative medicine, mostly via his mother. He then details aspects of his medical training, and how, in one of his clinical positions as a physician, he watched practitioners use homeopathy in a medical setting. As a new doctor, he uncritically accepted homeopathy’s magical healing forces and started to use homeopathy in his daily life. Even his dogs, he writes, did not escape homeopathy treatments!
Ernst then humbly describes his scientific training and various full professorships at prestigious universities, which eventually led to his appointment as the chair of Complementary and Alternative Medicine at Exeter University. He entered this position open-minded and excited about conducting research in an area that had not yet been effectively studied.
However, the trials and tribulations faced by Ernst as he delved into critical questions regarding the safety and efficacy of CAM therapies were enormous. As he and his research team continued to find that most alternative therapies were either ineffective or unsafe, he encountered severe personal attacks and horrific accusations regarding his motivations for conducting such research.
Even worse, many of the attacks came from those who had no medical or scientific expertise. He writes, “Many people, regardless of their background, status, knowledge or expertise, felt they knew so much better than I did.”
Despite these assaults, Ernst preserved and this memoir proves it.
Through engaging, honest, entertaining, and humbling storytelling, Ernst shows the scientific and medical communities how he bravely had to “abide by my own scientific, moral and ethical standards.”
I applaud Ernst for his exemplary moral principles, and having the guts to stick to them in the face of severe opposition.
A Scientist in Wonderland is a must read for everyone: from those who seek out alternative care to those who study it, and most importantly, for those who incessantly believe alternative medicine holds the secrets for longevity and health.

A great book and a timely warning
By Mr. J. Cartmell
I have read the book - review at amazon.co.uk.
It's not only a good book (five stars) it's also an important book for the historical insight and future warnings about meddling princes (both real and metaphorical) and the damage they can do.

A must read for anyone interested in medicine and "complementary medicine"!
By Daniel Olsson
A memoir that is a well written passionate defense of science, patient safety and integrity from the man who was the first professor at a university department devoted to "complementary medicine" and how he ran into trouble with industry interests and the house of Hanover while evaluating the methods used in "complementary medicine".
